why would you intentionally be waterboarded? it just seems beyond retarded to me

I can’t speak for Ryan and XO, but, personally, I’ve had an interest in being waterboarded for a long time before lan. Basically I’m curious about it on two levels: the first being that it’s “not torture”, merely “an interrogation technique” used by the utterly trustworthy and all-round nice guys: the USA. The second being the very sensation. I am/was genuinely curious about the sensation itself. What I experienced was definitely very unpleasant, but also intriguingly strange. It transpires that our technique wasn’t perfect, so I must admit that my curiosity is not sated.

The whole incident was subject to a second criticism: allegedly it turned into a bit of a showboaty-machismo circlejerk (and I was too enthusiastic/drunk to realise this) which made us come across as bigger faggots than we actually are. Welp. (Apologies to those we accidentally bored with our dumb antics!)

I’m sure being waterboarded is a truly horrific experience if the torturer is not merely doing it for shits and giggles, but I really don’t quite grok how this belittles or trivialises the plight of those who experience such suffering any more than, say, playing wargames in a marquee for a weekend trivialises the horrors of war.

Of course you could just think we’re dumb insufferable faggots and kneejerk think our antics are faggoty. Well, yes: We’re pretty big faggots.

BTW I found a waterboarding guide. Next LAN we can do it in private so it’s not so testosterone fuelled.
