since the last update, a number of frequently used plugins by the broad tf2 community are broken due to their new policy on player attachments
because one of the reasons tf2 is so greatly successful within most people is the many options of customization,
on this site is a petition for valve to fix this issue https://secure.voogru.com/petition/
thankyou for supporting the tf2 community
Signed, don’t really see what this update achieved to be honest.
EDIT: To explain this to people to prevent unnecessary flame.
Valve have REMOVED the ability to create custom entities attached to a player. Not broke, REMOVED. This affects a huge number of very popular mods (prophunt in particular).
They are not asking valve to stop breaking compatability, they are just asking them to not remove a very important feature.

You kidding me? lol so they spend their own time improving a game and your whining about it?
Sure they’ve broken plugins, but surely the “game” was there first before these “plugins” and whoever created the plugins would need to do a regular update everytime or most of the time Valve did an update to Team Fortress 2?
Your asking valve to take into consideration plug-in’s “compatibility” while their busy fixing or adding new content to the game? lol seriously the calibre is beyond me. So many whiners out there take for granted how lucky we are to be honest, i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again; Imagine if TF2 was treated like L4D/L4D² updates? or CSS :D or DoD?
At MOST software companies if you have add-ons or “plug-in’s” as you so call them based off a core engine or software it is the author’s responsibility of that plug-in to be updated.
Get a grip, stop taking things for granted -.- spoilt jache’s!
Cheers

Byte, they’ve not broke something, they have actually removed a feature that was very important to a large number of in-game mods.
If theres a technical reason for doing this, I’d be very interested to hear it from Valve, however I just can’t for the life of me think of a single benefit of it.
I am not saying that valve should keep plugins updated, but the recent update actively broke a lot of mods a lot of people use (maybe not a div1 player who only plays tf2 in 30 min periods on private servers).
The reason they are not working is because Valve actively changed things in tf2 to prevent people from hacking items, which is fine. The thing is, they were a bit overenthusiastic and also took things away that are solely allowing people to do things with models using server plug-ins (server side -> not mat hack or item exploit).
Now I am not forcing you to sign this petition or anything, just look at it and if you support it sign, but if you are fine the way things are just dont sign and please dont flame.
They are whining about Valve having removed features.
If you had spent 1 year developing a plugin and then Valve without warning removed the features that your plugin relied on (making it impossible for you to fix your plugin) then I’m sure you would whine as well.
oh jesus another internet petition. well guess this one may actually work since it’s valve were talking about but i wouldnt hold your breath.
It’s the mod makers prerogative to update their mods, why should Valve have to tip toe around every plugin when they release a free update? Practically, it’s much easier for the mod makers to update their own plugins rather than valve look through every plugin to see which files they may depend on and then try to implement changes to the game they made and are updating.

Subtle difference between being annoyed and whining F2 about your own plug-in breaking then making a petition.
l2boundaries tbh.
You of all ppl should know f2 as well, when i did my project in Java at the time in 2006 i used quite a few Hashtables and the order of how it picked up data in the table changed in their 2008 update(s) and my program stopped working/didn’t function correctly, it was my responsibility to update it not for Sun microsystems to care about it, i don’t think they even mentioned it in their release logs.
So yes it can be annoying but its to be expected?

No flame has been done Good Sir, it’s called a discussion a flame would be me belittling you or using foul language usually. :)

Well thats not really the same. It’d be more like Sun completely removing the hash functions from Java for no particular reason.
What they have done is remove a feature which makes a lot of mods literally impossible to implement.

Byte, I think you’re looking at this rather “simply” to be honest.
It’s more of a two part problem
– Valve are removing functionality from the game; one is effectively dealing with a game that is different (and less functional) than the game they bought.
(I think this is a bit of an odd position to hold, but you can see the point)
– Secondly, you are letting valve know that they have removed something that many people who use/mod the game appreciate and enjoy. This is definitely not a bad thing.
You may see it as “whine”, but it’s important to let a developer know when they do something that may damage their product (that they may not realise). Especially when the developer is a group like valve who have a good history of listening to their community (and have had some great success from community-mods taking off).
I also see your example as more evidence in favour – if you were in a HUGE production system (i.e. business critical system…. based on java…. anyway) and they broke it with an update – you would roll back (or not install the update depending on your foresight), and likely contact the vendor to discuss the “break” in functionality and how you might go about achieving the extra functionality and security of the update without bricking your system.
(although your example would be a better analogue to this situation if they removed the ability to use hashtables at all – which I’m sure the Java community would be incensed / confused about :D).
Petitions are just a way, albeit a bad one, of letting a group like valve know the community may like the functionality restored – though I agree the tone this one is a little more attacking than may be necessary.
(None of this suggests valve should be conscious of ALL mods ever made for TF2 and incorporate this when doing updates – but they should be made aware when something breaks).
Edit: didn’t notice – but they “broke” their own easter-egg: tf_birthday, apparently.
Last edited by for science,
Is Valve, a commercial gamemaker, responsibled if your third-party plug-in breaks due to a massive update for the game?
but they’ve broken their own feature too, like the demo playback and the birthday mod etc…

Well, I bet they’re gonna fix them as soon as possible
