i have pretty much exact same spec as you and i never go under 100. I use XP though because im old school.

Do some gfx card tests and if thats fine, consider a format… because something is fked up somewhere if it goes that low.

edit: i dont use any fps configs either.. everything on high pretty much

That rig should eat up tf2 easily on dx8, if you right click on the your tf2 short cut in your steam folder you can set windows to disable aero when tf2 launches.

If you are on a shitty net connection try removing any network settings in your cfg. I’m on tiscali who were bought out by talktalk. I used to ping about 20-40 on london or amsterdam servers but now I get 80-100.

I used m0re’s cfg for ages but on this bad connection it was un playable, I have to use default.

As I said, XP to W7 is no comparison on framerates, as Cube from pH will tell you when I advised him not to install W7 and instead go with XP, his framerate went from being tolerable to shitty immediately even with a fresh install of W7. I had the same experience doing benchmarks on my own primary build, and on another one too. W7 eats the fuck out of frames, but I’m not entirely sure why. Sneaky benchmarks on client’s PCs (that have asked me either to go from XP to W7 or the other way around) say exactly the same, and I’m yet to find a build where there isn’t at least a 10% drop in frames in benchmarking, and (only tested this on primary and secondary but this will apply to all to some degree) that is reproducible to the same effect (and perhaps worse, Cube’s case was worse than I anticipated…)

Windows 7 does not “suck up” frames. Don’t spread misinformation, please.

Misinformation? Seriously?

It vastly does in comparison to any variant of XP (if you thought I meant it literally, then you’re an idiot). I cannot think of any reason for it to generate less frames than stock XP with the same discrepancy showing in such different builds, and the truth is I’ve not researched why it does it, but it does, so my best explanation is that it sucks them up and sends them to Ballmer. Go look up some benchmarks, or better, go do some yourself and find that I’m right :)

EDIT: if you want me to name a fuckton of quals/certs after every post so that you and skyride don’t have your world turned upside down when i do these slam dunks, you just have to ask

Thanks for the response. I’ll have a look through it all properly later on. I think it’s abit weird as well as I have a mate who’s running almost exact same setup and gets fine fps without any configs or anything.
Couple of things I forgot to add in OP.

Resolution 1280×1024
I ping about 20-30 to uk servers so thats not the problem. Internet is pretty decent. I was just using the net settings in the quantum cfg but might be better off setting them myself. Will have a play about with them.

Its really more of a mid-way.

Will win7 have a lower frame rate than XP? yes

Will it be significantly lower than XP? except in freak cases, no

Still, I don’t see why you would suggest someone uses an 8 year old operating system with a huuuge number of security flaws just so a Video Game runs a little better….

To be honest, if you are getting such a low FPS that you want to go back to XP, you really just need to upgrade your PC.

Chris not wanting to start a flame war, but in your ‘experience’ windows 7 sucks up framerate

Windows 7 games performance compared to XP varies alot from game to game (most NEW games perform better in Windows 7), google it, you will find a +/- 10% max difference. in most games this is < 2%

Driver updates make a hell of a big difference as well.

I'm running windows 7 x64 with a frame rate never dropping below 80FPs @1440*900 all details set to max inc 8X AA (and i only got a Phenom II 955 & a Radeon 4770 512MB)

The problems experienced by the OP are not likely to be caused by Windows 7, it is more likely caused by a 3rd party application/virus etc, a broken component, or a poorly configured PC.

@ 1280*1024, i'd expect that rig to hit 60-70 FPS minimum without running any FPS cfg
OP I assume you have verified integraty of game cache, and defragmented cache files?

*edit*
If you are playing in windows mode, change back to full screen as windows mode does have a FPS hit

Yep, no windowed mode either.

My point was based on arithmetic and logic tests that I’ve done, the comment about games was an afterthought.

If you can find me a game which does not alter settings between operating systems which performs better in DX9 or lower on 7 than XP, I’ll eat my hat, and my shoes, and I’ll even pose for nude photos at LAN.

“huge number of security flaws”? no fewer than those of windows 7, last time I looked 2014 was the clincher.

World in Conflict performed equally well for me on XP as it does on W7.

And you’ve determined that all of the following parameters are true:

– They are both using the same release of DX (WiC has a DX10 mode, so it is quite possible it may have changed DX version when you switched OS)
– No settings which may affect performance have been altered
– You get the same average framerate over a reasonable period of time within a small margin of error

Yes. I left it on DX9, didn’t change settings and measured average framerate over 30 minutes or so.

My fps was actually slightly better all maxed out apart from AA which was at 4x @ 1920×1080 on W7 than I do on xp.

Check Win7 isn’t HDD Cacheing, It did that to me quite a lot of initial install which just destroyed my FPS.

Thats definately a software problem, that system is easy capable of 60fps+ with a config.

What is this and how can I check it?

focuz

Are you’ll sure windowed mode reduces fps? That’s a piss off, cause the alt+tab problem never occurs with windowed mode. :((((
