refusing a merc is always bad sportsmanship even despite things like how good a relationship you’ve had with the clan in the past, how often they’ve screwed you around etc. otherwise you’re descending to the same level yourself.

Fixed, tbh. The ecliptic vs SAS example was a good one where both teams were being dicks to each other. It was still bad sportsmanship of SAS to force ecliptic to play with 5, just like it was bad sportsmanship for ecliptic to deny SAS a merc and force an inactive player to play the match. Overall it was a wash because both teams acted like equally large dicks to each other (ecliptic coming off slightly worse by making the first dick move), but that’s not to say that neither team were bad sports about the whole thing.

Should always allow a merc as long as you see that their individual skill level is on par with the player they’re replacing. Even then you have an advantage as their team play will suffer. When teams ask for subs that are substantially more skilled than their player it’s only fair to say no gtfo, find someone else. The only problem is russians who have players and teams that are decent but I’ve never heard of : D.

Using the rules to get you points is a poor show. Play the game, win fairly and then you deserve to be where you are. Forcing teams to play with 5 or claiming defaults is lame and just shows you shouldn’t be playing at the level you’re at.

As said before, rather play a fair game and lose than an unfair game and win.

I’ll allow mercs if they are in the same division and generally I am more lenient to allow a team to pause during a round (long as they ask) and if they are running late I don’t mind waiting to allow them to come on.

But teams that are default hunting whores like RCTIC, make me wonder why I play the game.

I disagree about the mercs thing: its responsability of the teamleader to try to have a roster that doesnt need mercs; there is plenty of time before the leagues start and there is still time after the leagues are started… of course having new players in the team might be troublesome (we know very well considering that we hardly ever played two official matches with the same couple of soldiers) and might result in a waste of time, but its better than constantly needing a merc.

If you happen to have players missing at the last moment its because theyre unreliable OR extreme bad luck (it happened the same to us too): in this last case, as long as leaders are not dickheads and speak eachother, its almost ALWAYS possible to play the match some other day.

Deciding, as a team, to deny mercs COMPLETELY in every single match is a consistent choice and there are multiple legitimate reasons to justify and accept it; asking about the merc’s background and refusing him at the last moment saying that “he’s too strong, we dont want him to play” is what I find extremely unfair and unsporty, also considering that by saying that you are implying that “the rest of my team sucks so much that we are not going to accept a STRONGER guy in the enemy team”.

Deciding to deny mercs everytime makes you a dickhead tbh. All it achieves is default wins, and even though playing vs a team with mercs isn’t as good as playing a full team, not playing at all is a lot worse in terms of enjoyment and accuracy of the result.

Also lol it’s bullshit to say there’s never a reason to need a merc. Everynight empathy can play this week has been taken up by an official. That’s not because of a lack of organisation or lazyness, it’s because we had a player go on holiday and we attended i39 causing us to be close to 2 weeks without a roster. Granted we didn’t need a merc (so far), but all it takes is someones internet to fuck up or their PC to die and we have no other days to play games and no choice but to ask for a merc. This really isn’t that uncommon.

The TF2 community is more and more like the CSS community everyday.

Translation: People are dicks no matter what their background.

Except for me of course, am I right?

The ‘teams should make sure they have enough players signed up’ argument is a load of crap. This promotes extreme unsportsmanship for teams to add a load of inactive/ teamless people to their roster just to use in emergencies. These people wouldn’t count as mercs though they certainly are.

tbh make a rule, to say teams have to play with 6, and mercs are picked out by the team with 5 players and accpeted to play by the team with 6.

I’d like to see a ruling that states a team can utilise a single merc that is of the same level or below of the team that requires the merc. The merc must be registered in ETF2L.

Make it so that the team using the merc needs to inform their opposition so that they can check team history etc.

Problem solved and no more whiny numpties claiming defaults or 6v5

Who determines skill?

The easiest way to determine skill is by looking at a players team history.
If they have played in a div 2 team then they are available for merc duties in div 1 & 2 games.
If someone has never been on an ETF2L roster then they can play for a team in any division.
Of course some underhanded git would consider utilising a player from America that has no direct skill measure – those types of circumstances could be referred to the admins to give a ruling (after the fact).

While this is partially true, there are a lot of people, who are backup players and prefer to keep it that way due to real life occupations/obligations. It’s not an unsportsmanlike behaviour to add a few ‘backup-multiclassers’ to your team’s roaster and it will save you some of those precious brain-cells.

We have allowed mercs when we started playing in etf2l, teams used higher div players a LOT.

div3 skill demos in div5 matches, div2 medics in div 4 matches etc, now we only allow mercs if they are from a clan that has played several seasons so we can realistically gauge the player’s skill-level.

I don’t at all think that’s a dick move, people can fuck off with their “this player is not registered in any teams”-mercs.
