eXtv is proud to diversify it’s coverage and present some competitive play from the TF2 Mother Land, Australia!

CommFT Post: http://communityfortress.com/tf2/league-coverage/extv-clansport-tf2-master-series-ii.php

The 8-team invitational Clan Sport TF2 Master Series II Tournament Grand Finals were played on Feb. 21st and 22nd. With Rewound coming into the match from the Upper Bracket, -A-Team needed to win a first best of 3 series, which they did, to force this second series. We join the game on CP_Badlands, after Rewound won the first map, Gravel-Pit, 2-0.

Due to a 30 minute time limit on Badlands, expect to see a little different style of play than North American matches as once a team has the lead, they are keen to hang on to it! I offer plenty of critiques through out the match and I hope you guys discuss your thoughts on the topic. Stv demos can be tracked down here: http://ozfortress.com/showthread.php?t=36470.

I would love to cover some European matches in the future and will be keeping my eyes out for some amazing matches to highlight! Keep an eye on CommFT for a blog post concerning formats and further coverage. Discuss your thoughts on the Australian match and the impact of Format on gameplay!

Someone else gave me a hot tip about that www vs Dignitas match, just looked at the demo very briefly and saw the last cap :D Yea. I think that’d be a lot of fun to cover. Stay tuned… Any extra insight on players and match would be appreciated :D

What exactly is wrong with the australian format? Seems they have the same rules as here in europe, just 30 minutes for one map and maybe a windifference of 5. I never experienced that this format leads to defensive play. But maybe only in the last 5 minutes when one team has only 1 point more they go for the lockdown, because they dont want to take unnessecary risks.

Was a really good watch. I like the autralian valley push, where the demo jumps into choke. Seems to work really well.

It seemed a fair bit different to badlands matches I’ve watched before. -A- played very defensively at times when they had a huge uber advantage.

Did -A- win the competition with the draw on badlands? If so I can understand the defensive nature of their play.

Team rewound really did a great come back there, whilst team -A- were actually sitting ducks, not using theire advantage. Really good job and they know when to take theire risks and not. Demo jump valley-choke was pretty effective. Yesterdays idk? VS TCM badlands last round looked pretty damn impressive, when under 1 minute to the end of the map they got the chanse of pushing down to the last point and I really think that made some pressure, nerves and almost a surprise fast round.

Team Rewound won the first map: Gravel-Pit, so the draw allowed them to win the finals overall. If -A- team had won Badlands, it would have forced a 3rd map. I don’t agree with the draw leading to a win, as -A- team should have had the chance to win the final map and force a golden cap, but it was the decision of the organizers in an attempt to not have things run too long.

Yea, it is the same format as the Europeans, but played decidedly more passive. I think this Australian match shows how the 30 minute format can go wrong, even though the ending was exciting. The First to 5/Hour Long format can still include turtling, and gripes can be raised about it. How do you guys feel about the 30 minute CP format? The 30 minute format facilitates bo3 series, which are pretty cool but seem like quite a strain in the face of multiple matches per week. It seems like the map picking system, which they used in this tournament, disproportionally leads to maps like Well being played alot. This happened with TCM and PwR gaming, playing Well twice in a row.

The League system of determining which map is to be which week works well for promoting new maps and straying away from familiar turf. And the lack of bo3 series makes playoffs more concise with focused action. Surf through the eXtv youtube channel to see coverage of last season’s ESEA-I playoffs.

I’m looking forward to hearing more discussion and input from you guys on this.

I can see how first to 5 eliminates the chances of this tactic, but I can only remember one time a team turtled against us on a forward point to use up time in 6 seasons and numerous cups. So whilst it’s a potential problem I don’t think it really affects 30 minute TF2 as much as it could, most teams are more likely to push the advantage.

The commentary was good as always.

Hm, thats good to hear Snowie. It seems like even in Australia this match was a bit of an exception from the norm. I thought it was very illuminating example of why teams need to keep the pressure on and in highlighting areas where passivity hurts a team.

I like the shorter 30 minute maps, it makes coverage easier that’s for sure :D. I think the half time dynamic of the NA format helps promote aggression as if there are 5 minutes left in the map, you want to score a point instead of just wasting an advantageous position. 2 20 minute halves would be much better than 2 30 minute halves in my opinion. For once a week league action, 30 minutes almost seems too short while 40 minutes is a good compromise. Shorter halves, but that would promote attacks.
