Some, Potentially, Useful Rocket Jumps

Hihi!
I’ve put together a little movie showing as many potentially useful/fun rocket jumps as I could think of on the widely played competitive maps that I haven’t already seen in previous rocket jumping videos. The vast majority of these are double jumps of one kind or another so they’ll generally require a full buff for them to be useful in a match context (unless they land you right near a medkit), also some of them are in positions where pushes happen a lot so you could potentially get lifted by an uber to ameliorate some of the self damage :) There’s also a few little sequences that I can’t really see being useful unless Valve releases some sort of “no-self-damage-while-rocket-jumping” unlock with the soldier update.. but I thought they were fun anyway :D
I’m sure a lot of these could have been done more smoothly/efficiently..but give me a break I’m only in Div 5 :P
Cheers

It may have helped you to call it “A tutorial to beginners rocket jumps” or somthing to give it some sort of purpose :). If the film was just for your enjoyment then fairy muff ;)
the RJ “speed jumps” are great, but until valve sort the momentum and fall-damage problem nobody will be using these jumps in match situations as you’ll half kill yourself trying something fancy. Fall damage should be a set amount for each class at whatever height and whatever momentum the player is falling.
Would have been better if you left the health indicator on so we knew if these jumps nearly killed you or not. Still a good watch though.

Yeah Rocket Man’s an amazing video, I’ve watched it too many times to count :| .. didn’t even know you could skip jump until I saw that :D
@Fragga – I think the problem with skip jumps currently, as pointed out by some chappy on gotfrag is:
“you take the full self-damage with powerskips if you’re below the height you would land without crouching
or in other words, if you’re 3 feet above the ground while crouching, and not crouching, you’d plant on the ground, you’ll take the full self-damage regardless of whether or not you’re crouched. it’s probably a glitch. ”
It’s possible screwed up fall damage also comes into it a bit, but I think it’s the increased initial self damage which is the main source of the problem. I’m not sure if this is something that Valve could/would ever look to fix.. I mean who knows maybe they consider this type of jumping an unintentional exploit or something :s
valve won’t change anything, especially as any change like this would have zero effect in the public scene – personally I find fall damage, especially momentum fall-damage far worse than self-damage, even a basic rj + fall damage (without momentum added) amounts to some 75 health – seems to me the scaling of the fall damage is too severe and that goes for any class.
Yeah I guess it’s unlikely they’ll ever fix this (if they even consider it broken) .. and given their history of tinkering with the rocket jump mechanics previously maybe that’s not such a bad thing. It does strike me as a real shame that skip jumps, which personally I find to be both satisfyingly tricky to pull of and simply the most fun thing you can do as a soldier are so discouraged by the game mechanics. In a perfect world the game would be incentivised such that all the classes were at their most useful when played in the way which is most fun.. whereas currently with soldier you’re generally best serving your team by trudging around on medic protection duty :<
