it differs like 15 fps with m0res highhigh all low and all high no cfg. is it my cpu ? btw, its no longer playable even with m0res highhigh and dx80. cos if i go on 32 man servers, it goes below 60 and if its under 60 i suck
:(( any suggestions on what cpu to get if i dont wanna change motherboard ? money is not a big problem, but try to keep it below ~180 pounds.

It’s your CPU. I got a similar system as you, just worse video card and more RAM, and I can’t really get an FPS boost no matter what settings I try. The only things that actually make my FPS worse is AA and HDR, I play with everything else on highest because it makes absolutely no difference. I’ve tried m0re’s and noid’s config, practically the same FPS.

I have a pretty decent rig (I7 920 @ 3.9ghz and 2x 4870×2 with 12gb ram) running win7. I’ve found TF2 to be CPU-bound by far, since I had the very same 4870×2 (but one) with a c2d E6600 @ 3.4ghz before and the pretty much same result — 200~ fps stable in “non-fights” and always around 150fps otherwise (m0res ‘normal’ fps config, 1680×1050, 2xmsaa 4xaa — everything else set as low as possible). Drops to ~70 when on one those “crazy” pubs when bored was/is not uncommon.

Even the 8800GT with that old c2d processor was quite okay at the very same resolution, without the (MS)AA.

All this running dxlevel 81 and the other “usual” optimizations of course. Just need to face it, tf2 doesn’t run awesome no matter what.

(EDIT: To clarify as to not cause any confusion: I know the load left4dead and tf2 puts on each core in a SLI/Crossfire setup — with more GPU-cores, the load goes down and you can increaste MS/AA without anything taking a hit, but it will not do anything in firefights, which will be just as shitty.)

To be honest, having a e8500 clocked at ~3.8ghz and a ATI 4890 would probably be the best “bang for the buck” you can get for TF2 today. I’d even be so bold to question if anyone can prove me a better setup for the game overall.

(EDIT: Another clarification, I’ve had Nvidia since day 1, voodoo 1/2/3/5 (blasphemy, rip 3DFX), Riva, TNT1, TNT2 and all the geforces up and until 280 — I do not fancy ATI much, but I can’t argue against raw number-crunching done by the cards in the source engine)

pretty decent?

Gryzor you little bragger :>

However, as a test, I played with full shaders, aa, hdr, bloom, motion blur and all that crap on DX9, got about 60 FPS all around on the ETF2L pub with around 18 people in the server.

A week ago I played with m0re’s config (including all the launch options etc etc) and I averaged 70 :)

Can’t wait for my new computer! Gaaaah

I used to have an option in my motherboard setup, which was called something like silentrun or whatever. I think i got a fps boost by switchin it off so my MB would let the cpu get hotter and fan cool it for a bit more noise.
Used to have x64 4200 + AMD

Maybe you could give that a shot :)

pretty decent?

(and the rest of the WTFs?)

If you read the rest, I hope it comes into perspective that clarifies why I wrote the specs (and the whole post itself!). I do have recent experience on both architectures and hopefully you will trust me enough to be able to tell what the difference would be in your particular case. I find my post easy to extrapolate necessary information from and associate with current configurations to envision any real-world benefits.

Then again, I always do and always fail *snicker at self* (No I don’t).

As a side-node, I need the excessive memory-bandwidth for my work. I just happen to play some games on it now and then, life is boring without a hobby (also a lie, let’s shoot pixels 24/7 and believe it’s worth it).

Thats the guy that stole maddy! its a sign.

tbh I don’t think tf2 likes AMD dual cores very much. settings dont matter at all, nothing affects my shite fps

Well I got a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6400+ 3.2GHz processer with a GeForce 8800 GTX and it runs at the capped 100 fps solid drops to about 75 on mid. (Windowed Mode full res 1280 x 1024)

Just getting my new ATI Radeon HD 4890 soon and I know its gonna make fuck all difference to my fps in TF2, its all about the cpu. I know TF2 maxs out core 1 and 80% on the 2nd core. So its not the gfx settings that are the problem, its the processing the data. Makes no difference if I run on high or low settings get pretty much the same fps.

So in short you just need a better cpu if you want good fps, no fps configs will help you massively since tf2 is far too cpu-bound.

Also the great thing about these threads, someone comes on says they got low fps looking for help and people take it as a excuse to spam there specs and amazing fps to rub salt into the wound. lol

x2 5000 isnt good enough

ive got one of those without fps config and everything on full settings but no AA, i get 80 fps constant, apart from maybe 32 man instaspawn duel
