Why do we still use vent on pickups?

No… Mumble has the capabilitys to be ALOT higher quality than Ventrilo you just have to set up properly :XX I have mine on lowest quality and its fine though :S
i have my mumble on the highest quality and it sounds like fucking ass
i’m not exactly going to use pickups to judge the sound quality of mumble vs. ventrilo seeing as apparently everyone who plays pickups plugs a pair of headphones into their mic jack and talks through the left earpiece like it’s 2001 and they can’t afford real mics, but from vents with competent people with normal mics, i’d choose vent for quality every single time.
Vent is more wide spread than mumble so most people knows how it works, the sound quality is good and it’s extremely easy to setup.
I see no reason to change it really, I also prefer mumble but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with vent. If they used TS2 however…
there’s no reason not to, people are just resistant to change for the sake of it.
there isn’t that much between the two though, apart from the difference in delay. anyone know a fix for that in vent?
how long is the delay in vent? it must be long enough for a medic to have been fan 2 shot dead before you hear his screams of “SCOUT ON ME SCOUT ON ME SCOUT ON ME OH FFS!”?

+1, though some are also just simply misinformed. (People who think Mumble crashes a lot or has more delay or worse sound quality)
Our not so scientific tests says that the delay on a 20 ping server is about half a second longer on vent, not good for a medic in pain.
Vent works fine for CS, not for tf2.
As far as I’m informed, it’s much more difficult to set up a mumble server.
And also, it’s simple not as well-developed yet as ventrilo is.
For example, in the multiplay ventrilo we have the TF2 server info set as comments so you can simply right click on the channel on ventrilo and click “Copy Comment”. You can’t do that in Mumble because it doesn’t allow certain characters.
Another example is when you do captain picking, you can’t put you class in your comment, because you don’t have that option in Mumble. You could change your name though, but again it doesn’t allow certain characters, so you can’t call yourself “F2 (soldier)” etc.
You can’t put a password on a channel. Well, I’m not 100% sure about this, but when I right click on a channel I can’t find any options to set a password.
And in general there’s just too many weird things going on. On a server where I am SuperUser, if I right click on a channel and click “change description”, type “test” and click Send, then I just get disconnected from the server?
I think the point is that from a corporate point of view, Mumble simply isn’t a finished product yet.
Ventrilo on the other hand simply works. It has been used for years, it is stable and nothing unexpected ever happens. Players from other games that join the pickups are also more likely to know ventrilo and have it installed already.

Within the last two weeks I was playing a pcw, and suddenly two players’ Mumble crashed which also made their TF2 minimize. There is no doubt that Mumble is still more unstable than Ventrilo.
And about sound quality, on the multiplay ventrilo server we use a quite low sound quality. We actually used to use a higher quality but there were one person that complained that every time he talked he would lag ingame. Personally though I think the sound quality is just fine, I don’t see it as a reason to switch to Mumble at all.

See: “a lot”
One time isn’t a lot. Mumble has become more stable over time.
But I see your concern, if absolute stability is a priority over usability and audio quality/delay.
vent is shit nuff said. only admin options in vent are better coded atm, like f2 said.
The delay in vent is noticeable, when I was at i36 with our mix team we were all sat along a row but will ofc still used a voice server.
When we used vent there was a noticeable pause between me transmitting and me hearing myself on the persons next to me PC, this is at lan remember. So we switched to mumble instead and the delay was almost non-existent. You can test this urself by going to audio output and looping back via the server. The delay you will hear is what others will hear as long as they have a similar ping ofc.
Here is a good vid showing the delay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMfF36NvoJc
But even despite the lag problems, I F2 is correct in saying the vent interface is far more user friendly than mumble. So is a case of the pros outweigh the cons.
You could also argue that weather in game it actually makes a difference if a scout gets behind and creeps up on ur medic and two shots him, the delay would not really of made too much difference your team should have been more aware of rouge scouts.
nobody cares if mumbel dumbel is free or open source, vent sounds better, maybe with lag, but fuck it, its just pickup
Agree with this, didnh’t bother reading the rest.
Vent is provided for free, its a fun muck around so who cares

Shouldnt let that guy say his name :X
Mumble is open source, and the people making it dont get paid anything
Ventrillo is a proper company and the people making it get paid
Mumble is VERY hard to set up compared to ventrillo and as F2 stated you cant set passwords on the channels, if you can its probably in the databases somewhere which is a ball ache for server admins who cant access the dedi box.
AFAIK (dont take my word on this) multiplay get ventrillo at almost no cost therefore saying MUMBLE IS FREE means nothing to them.
alot of people have issues with the volume in mumble and causing problems for full screen games (mostly CoD, and sometimes tf2).
So for now it is best that they stick with ventrillo until mumble gets ALOT of changes
vent rocks ass!
