Problems with resolution..

Hi.

I use 1680/1050 on desktop, i have a nice widescreen monitor. So, i load TF2 up, put it to 1280/800 (same ratio as desktop), but it refuses to accept this as a resolution. I know it accepted it before i reinstalled vista, but now it doesn’t.

It shows the menu screen as kind of half on, half off the screen. As though it can’t deal with the resolution, so it just shows me the top right hand corner of that resolution and the rest of it is offscreen.

Can anyone help me with this?

The other problem being that, before i reinstalled, i limited my framerate to 76 and it felt totally smooth and i was used to the feel of it. Now, after reinstalling, my 76 FPS doesn’t feel smooth to me, it feels a lot more juddery than before. Doesn’t make sense does it, but i can’t work out why. All my drivers and stuff are up to date.

But i’m hoping the resolution problem will be half the fix.

Monitor Driver as well downloaded and updated yea?

Thats the only thing i can think of OR your current gfx drivers are not as correct if that makes any sense for example for my laptop i have tweaked drivers but it didn’t cover the resolution i wanted but in the nvidia settings for it i can add a custom resolution in and so then it was fine with it…. but with the original gfx drivers it had the resolution i wanted so..

And that also happened to me with monitor not being soo smooth either mate after i installed the tweaked driver in for my gfx. What card u got ? And what monitor?

Cheers

Hm.. well i have a geforce 9800gtx, got the drivers from nvidia for the 9x series and it’s recognised the card AS that, and i got my monitor drivers from asus as well.

I’m going to try windows update, but i’m not sure if i did that on my last install so i can’t see it having any luck – fingers crossed though.

I’m honestly perplexed, i didn’t even mean to fucking get rid of vista and reinstall in the first place. Installed windows 7 on a separate hard drive, didn’t like it, so i went back to vista and it locked me out, had to reformat.

Lol, when i read byte had replied, i thought “omg lame comment incoming”, and saw it was a good response. 2 minutes later i check and dunc has replied and i think “sweet, a good response” and it’s a lame response :D

Norris

tried to launch start with -w 1280 -h 800?

Aye norris, same trick. Also did windows mode 1280/800 and change to fullscreen etc.

Invalid comment dunc. ie. a comment from an invalid.

Check your launch options for things such as “dxlevel” – i’ve found that if you have say dxlevel 81 in there, it will not only force dx to version 8.1 but also force your graphical settings to certain values. Try removing it – it should still remain at dx version 8.1 but not force your graphical settings to anything specific.

Also, i don’t know if this is related to the problem, but i’ve noticed that when i move the mouse slowly across say 30cm, it does about 180 degrees. If i do it very fast across 30cm, whip it, it does about 90 degrees.

I almost suspect that that’s somehow to do with the juddery feeling i get at 75fps, cos if i unlimit the framerate and i’m around 300 fps, it doesn’t seem to do it anymore.

But then again, at 75fps, that’s with 1600dpi/0.45 sensitivity. If i change it to 400dpi/1.8 sensitivity, it doesn’t seem to do it either.

I know for a fact the fps is juddery, but i’m willing to accept i’m over analysing things on the mouse :P

Edit: Every possible way i can turn maccel off, i’ve done it.

Edit2: I’ve also been told that limiting your framerate at 75 (well, fps_max 76) can sometimes cause tearing, so i upped it to 100, but it still just isn’t right. I could always remove the frame limit (and i did in a match last night), but i’ve got this juddering problem stuck in my brain and i can’t accept that it’s not a problem until i fix it :E Everything just feels wrong! I need that smoothness at 75fps :P

i love morf, hes fixed it!

hm does any other res beside 1680/1050 work? had a similar problem to yours with my CRT. it was because of custom refresh rates. always had to run stuff with -refresh xx according to what the display driver could handle for the chosen resolution. if nothing helps, try autoconfig your game as well but make sure you backup your stuff first.

Currently redownloading tf2 for the hell of it. I know 1680/1050 works, in tf2. I know 1280/768 works too.

And that doesn’t make sense because they’re both different ratios. Yet 1280/800 is the same ratio as 1680/1050, but that doesn’t work!

What’s this about refresh rates though? That sounds like it could be linked to the juddery problem.

Edit: 1280/800 also doesn’t work on desktop. Now that is strange.

Aha. So if i change my refresh rate to 75hz, i can use 1280/800 on desktop.

Thanks norris, i’m getting somewhere at least!

So is there a way to force it so that i can run a game in 75hz and at 1280/800?

AND WHY IS THIS SUDDENLY A PROBLEM AFTER A REINSTALL!?

Norris

sounds pretty much like a monitor driver problem to me. try to reinstall them. try different versions if possible.

start with -refresh 75
or -freq 75

grimbob

Just use -freq 75 in launch commands?
