So I have heard it being said that tf2 is more taxing on cpu than on gpu.

Is this true, and if so; why?

eoN^

I dont know why but it is true, I have a 4870 and a decent dual core cpu and i get a pretty bad fps on full without my config but if you have an i7 and lets say a cheaper GPU you will probably be able to get a stable config on high settings. I think its due to the physics systems etc.

Yeah its fucking true, jesus got google?

=[IDK]=

jesus doesn’t need google joske, d0h

I guess it’s true, got a pretty good gpu and a shitty cpu -> poor performance without any high fps cfg

TF2 is graphically fairly simple – a lot of the shine of the game comes from complex use of things that move – a lot of particle effects, physics and the like. At the moment, I’m guessing TF2 doesn’t do these computations on the GPU (with something like CUDA) so the CPU gets pushed. Alongside all this extra stuff, it’s still got to do all the basic stuff of a game (like calculating where everything should be, network interpolation, and a whole heap of other stuff).

Just speculating, but that’s my guess

Source has always been one of the few game engines that rely heavily on the CPU instead of the GPU.
It was like that in HL2 and I don’t see it changing.

I think one of the reasons it was developed like that is that quite some people have got a machine with a pretty decent CPU but an shitty GPU, like the ones from HP, Dell, Acer, etc (excluding the gaming models ofc).

As far as I know, you can play on everything maxed out (maybe excluding AA) you need to have GF7600 and atleast (!!!) Dual Core @ 2.3GHz. Of course that was writen by non-gamer so I guess you’ll get ~40FPS with that.
