Introducing a pay league as an alternative to ETF2L seems doomed to failure as 90%+ of the participants will get nothing in return and the actual level of play in season 1 of the competition will be no different than what you can get for free in ETF2L for these teams.
If you want people to pay money then you have to offer them something they cant get for free elsewhere, what are the majority of teams going to get (from the outset) from ESEA that they dont currently get from ETF2L?Add bitcoin mining to the mix and I just dont see this ever reaching a critical mass, maybe if they gave it away until it eclipsed ETF2L in quality and participation they can make a case for fees.
Close etf2l => move to ESEA = ggwp.
Why are you unlikely to win prizes? You think you’ll not improve at all?
EDIT: And yeah if the top scene move over you’re limited to how far you can progress in etf2l.
and I’ll just drop this here for anyone who is interested in esa. Don’t like to shittalk people but really after that fiasco it’s deserved rofl http://pastebin.com/y0WYbH6t

Not everyone can win, the whole model is built on the majority of people paying and getting no winnings. I’m just being realistic.
In the short term I am not likely to win any money from this league, so why would I pay for it when I can get the same level of competition I would get from this league, for free in ETF2L.
The only people incentivised to pay for this are the people with a realistic chance of taking some winnings in the short term, or people who REALLY care about “the scene”. Neither of which is me.
Edit: Yeah, if all the high level teams moved over to ESEA then if/when a player reached that level they have a reason to pay. But will all the high level teams move over exclusively to ESEA if the low level players who pay their winnings don’t move too?

So let’s play a little game.
I’m joe-blogs-bad-gamer. I’ve been playing TF2 for 6 months and I want to get into 6v6. I’ve just made a team with some friends from the public server I play on and we can’t wait to get playing.
Tell me why I should pay to play in ESEA Open instead of playing for free in ETF2L Div 6.

Do you need to pay premium + the league fee (I’m a noob when it comes to ESEA :D)?
Yes. You pay to play in ESEA regardless of division. The Invite LAN finals/prize pool is paid for mostly by the IM league fees. The sponsors are filling in the gaps, they’re not the primary source of income.
Yes you do but only for the exact times you need to play your officials.
@ Skyride : Play ETF2L until you get to grips with the game and once you want to progress further, join up with ESEA! Every question here can be answered purely by looking at the american scene.

You shouldn’t, and you won’t. The same as in america now. Utter scrubs play UGC, but when they reach a div4~ level they can compete for the same sort of prizes that prem has.

I did and my point still stands. At the point you begin charging fee’s, if you don’t offer a league that is far in advance of ETF2L in terms of participation and quality then what reason do I (who is unlikely to receive any winnings) have to pay for it?
Who said you have any obligations, if you don’t like it don’t play.
Also I can argue that ESEA is more advanced than ETF2L in certain aspects, but I won’t bother. Play this game in any way you want to, ESEA is in the end just an opportunity to expand EU TF2 and perhaps gain their support to send EU teams to Texas.
Imo this is a rare opportunity, but again do whatever you feel like.

Ok. I’m a mid level div4 player. I have no real chance of being in the money. Why should I play there?

there is a prize pool for all levels of ESEA rather than just the top level as in ETF2L. so there is fiercer competition for those people which improves them as players, even if they don’t win.

I don’t feel like the questions I’m asking are particularly unreasonable. If you can’t convince the lower level people to play (the people who pay most of the prize pot) how will it ever become sustainable? I’m just asking what the league offers to the people who aren’t winning prizes that they can’t get from etf2l.
one of the biggest chances for europe tf2 to expand and become a serious league
(pls dont make the mistake we did with ESL and scare them away)
PRO ESEA!!!! HYPE!
The prize pools scale with the number of premium signups and paid league fees — sustainability shouldn’t even be in question.
ESEA won’t suddenly vanish because some outlandish registration isn’t met. Hell, the first season of NA ESEA had only 20 teams.

Only for Season 15 in ESEA will all teams in EU TF2 play in one division. There will be an Invite division, and maybe even an IM division in S16 (Depending on how many teams sign up and stay alive after S15).
Instead of speculating, you should sign up and support ESEA EU TF2.
