Some interesting stuff is happening with Steam right now. You can collect trading cards in games that participate (TF2 does, of course), trade or craft them, level your account and get “upgrades” like bigger friendslist, emoticons in chat, more profile options etc.

You can get an invite by joining the Trading Card Beta group and waiting. Or you buy one for currently 2,3 € in the market, haha.
Is anyone in yet? I would like to hear some opinions :)
Trading UI options for cards is not good…
Seems like attempt to evolve Steam into some Facebook like meta-RPG and further monetize the user base. Don’t forget that for all cards sold via the Steam market Valve also gets a cut. From a business point this is brilliant, those digital trading cards can be created out of thin air (digitally) and they instantly make money.
P.S.
There is no reset for card drops. The cards that drop are all the cards you can get by (4-5? For TF2). You will have to trade for the rest. But you can receive extra cards for every 9$ you spend in the MannCo store.
Personal observation concerning the new Steam profile: The number of “Games owned” is displayed rather prominently.

They aren’t forcing anyone to pay for anything – it’s still your own choice whether or not you let your money squeezed out of you :)
