[…]
how else would you pronounce koe – itje?
It’s pronounced “queef”
Nice.
In my little head it’s always been a play on ‘caught yer’
koit-cher.
Notice I said little head.

The mysterious mysteries of strange nick name mystery.
Singularly, ‘oe’ is pronounced ‘oo’ (as in ‘cookie’).
The same goes for ‘i’ which is pronounced ‘ee’ (as in ‘weed’)
The ‘oei’ sound IS one syllable, you pronounce ‘oo’ which then “flows” into an ‘ee’ sound, ending in a “Y” sound (as in ‘Yak’)
oo-ee-yyyyyy
The approach to pronouncing ‘tje’ is best looked at by splitting off the ‘t’ entirely and treating it as a separate part of the word (though it is not pronounced as such). Finally, ‘je’ is equal to ‘ye’, sounding similar to “duh” but short (from a Dutch perspective, ‘duh’ sounds like ‘duuuuhhhhhh’ – English tends to linger on vowels for hours per word, in Dutch vowels are short and strong).
(koo-ee-yy)-(t-juh)
Simple right?
