I had to share this with you guys, it’s just fucked up :D

frag clip thread or at least the movies subforum…
Also maybe the engi turned left just as you stabbed?
You ‘hitting’ the wall is just a prediction error, the server (which is slightly ‘off’) saw you (barely) hit him. Legit stab.

I don’t see how that in any way could’ve been a backstab, server being slighty delayed or not..
Spy has been fucked for a long time IMO

I get alot of those crazy stabs, but this one I linked to is just fucked up, how in the hell can I backstab someone if I hit the wall and you can hear the sound.

Melee attacks are traced with a cube ‘hull’ and checked for intersections with other player hulls (melee does not care for hitboxes).
game/shared/tf/tf_weaponbase_melee.cpp
These hulls are axis aligned (so at a 45° angle your melee range is ‘longer’).
He attacks, prediction error occurs on the client (hits the wall). Server registers as a hit to the engineer.
A few ms before that the engineer turned to the left.
All conditions for a backstab are now fulfilled.
These things happen…

Well fuck me, that is proper retarded.. I see what You mean about the engineer turning to his side and everything, but now I’m just asking myself the question; Valve really couldn’t find a better way for melee to work? I mean that shit right there is just blatantly broken?

You’d rather wait for the server to confirm the hit before anything happens at all, causing horrible lag on all your melee swing registration? Unless everyone has 0 or extremely low ping, there isn’t an easy way to do it.

tbh the way this works is pretty fucking clever from a programming/design perspective
client side =/= server side

50k lines of code not working properly or 300k lines of code that does its job properly – you choose. Or maybe it’s not that simple?
