Difference between latency and ping

Hi! Could someone please explain to me what is the difference between latency (what I see in server list) and ping (in game, when I view stats, TAB).

Latency and ping is the same thing. Difference from server list and scoreboard reading is that they use different methods of calculating it. Use net graph to check your real ping, its more precise.

Latency is the time delay between sending a message from a local machine to a remote machine and receiving a reply to it.
Sending this message is the act of ‘pinging’.

-> ‘ping’ is -incorrectly- used to mean the same thing as latency

You may find opinions in the Internet saying that latency is the time it takes a message to reach the remote end and ping is latency plus return trip’s duration, but that’s untrue – both include the return trip time, which leads us to conclusion that, besides the last remark, Spike’s explanation is correct (except ping and latency are, in fact, interchangeable terms).
