Begging the community for money every time we want to do something that costs more than a few hundred euros isn’t sustainable. If we can’t raise that money through sponsorship then there’s no point really.

TF2 as a game is in the perfect position to be the next major FPS esport, but it’s not going to happen by badgering every for a 5 digit sum of money via chipin every few months.

TF2 is not going to be the next major esport. Its got its position in the e-sports world but its too old and too casual for any sponsors to take it seriously. Valve are our only hope but from what i’ve seen they wont and probably never will dump on us a pile of money to do dreamhack or somthing similar.
Sponsors want to sponsor somthing that will make them money or provide large exposure from a brand new exciting game.
If we want to do dreamhack Valve is the only way we’d do it, but again why should they spunk a ton of money on it? :]

You’re saying all these things have to be bought/build? Why not rent it? Why not have people sleep in hotels and stuff? Is all this luxury really needed?

It is too naive to still think that Valve care about competitive tf2.

For some reason that’s 5 000 EUR off.

Also I think all the costs is because they have to do everything from scratch.

All of this should be read again, the bolded bit being the most important and relevant, just never gonna happen unfortunately.

Even a small percentage of the money needed to host TF2 at dreamhack would be MUCH more useful in providing a decent prize pool for etf2l to offer, thereby generating lots more interest in TF2 in general and possible sponsors afterwards.

A £5-10,000 prem pot and a grand or two for div 1 or something would do a lot to drive spectator numbers and player professionalism forwards.

I would ‘chip in’ to any official etf2l prize fund immediately and probably often, (after a few too many glasses of wine for example!), if there was a little button on the front page asking me to, just sayin’.

And yes, I used a comma up there so you don’t have to count zero’s to work out what number I’m trying to represent.

If I’ve said it 10000000000000000000 times, I’ve said it a 10,000,000,000,000,000,000 times slightly louder.

Darn

rockit like

50k is a rather small sum of money, considering the amount of exposure tf2 gievs.

I would love to see this happend because i live very close and it would be great for comp tf2 but i don’t this will happend, atleast for a while. And i agree it would need valve support

Probably is, but you can’t blame people for wondering why.
I mean sure, comp TF2 is not the same thing as casual TF2, and maybe Valve isn’t happy with the way 6v6(I doubt they have issues with HL) structures itself in terms of maps played, unlocks, class limits, etc, but on the other hand you have Dota 2 which is infinitely less accessible both to new players and spectators(with no MOBA/RTS backgound), and Valve markets it like it’s the second coming of Christ.

etf2l big cash money prices is introverted rather than extroverted exposure, it doesn’t bring anyone new to the game like DH would

To be completely honest, the majority of things posted in this thread are excuses. Sure right now we have a lot more hurdles to overcome than if TF3 or UT4 comes out, but when you get right down to it the problem is that no where near enough people actually care.

I mean like really care. Starcraft 2 is not a major esport by chance or luck, it’s a success because from day 1 of the beta there was a shit load of people who were willing to put absurd amounts of time, effort and money into making it what it is today. Players, Casters, Tournament Organisers, etc. Even if you want to write it off and say “ah but that’s just because SC1 was big in Korea”, then sure, but it’s not exactly luck either than BW became what it was.

The same goes for CS and Quake at their heights.

I don’t expect everyone to put massive hours into it, but how can you be a major esports when 2 of the best teams in Europe can’t even be arsed to organise their game a few days in advance? Probably the second biggest game of this season of ETF2L was scheduled about 4hrs before it was due to start. How the fuck are you supposed to promote it to this new playerbase? Or show sponsors the kind of exposure they’re going to get?

This is probably a bit of an incoherent rant, but I’m fed up reading this tired old “oh this game is too old to get sponsorship” crap. It’s complete and utter bullshit.
