Since I got an SSD, my recorded demos are really jumpy.

Hey gang.
I got an SSD a few weeks back and all’s good. I’ve got windows, TF2 and a few other programs on it.
Whenver I watch back one of my recorded demos since I got the SSD, they are really jumpy to watch back which is pretty irritating.
Watching back anyone else’s demos is fine, so I’m pretty sure its to do with the writing of the demo to the ssd.
It’s a Sandisk Extreme SSD 120GB http://www.sandisk.com/products/ssd/sata/extreme/
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Maybe there is some software I can use to test its writing speed or something?
Cheers!
I had problems after switching Too SSD too, never knew what the Problem was but fixed If with a clean redownload and installing of steam and tf2 ( backup and copying didn’t help)
Hmm, I have this too, though I’ve had it before I got my SSD.. Never did find a solution :(
I didnt used to have it when TF2 was installed on a normal HD. More help please guys!
Wild guess here.. Write buffering? Should be somewhere in Device Manager -> Your SSD -> Properties. If it’s on turn it off or vice versa.. Worth trying I suppose.
I think this is to do with interp actually.
Sorry to tell you that considering the controller (Sandforce) you have a relatively bad SSD. Get your money back if you can and buy the Samsung 830/840 Pro. Can’t help with your problem though. All I can say is that the switch from HDD to SSD only had positive impacts for me.

I have now unticked “Enable write-caching on this device”. Will go for a little test and report back.

I’m using chris’ good connection settings which give me an interp of 15.2ms. When playing back the demo interp 0.1, 0.2 doesnt make much difference. As I said in my earlier post, I can watch other peoples demos back with interp 0.1 and they are fine.

How come this is a bad SSD? Have you heard of other people having similar issues? I only had good recommendations about this one and it should have good read/write speeds (550MB/s / 510MB/s).
In the case of SSDs, never believe the manufacturer’s specifications. As I mentioned in my edited post, the problem is the Sandforce controller. There are several key issues:
– After every cell of the Sandforce SSD has been written once, the overall performance will drop by ~20%. Takes a while but it is bound to happen.
– Sandforce performs very well in synthetical tests because they use compressible data. Sandforce’s performance relies heavily on compressible data. However, not all data is (well) compressible and therefore Sandforce controllers fail to achieve the same performance level in “real” applications.
– There have been a lot of BSOD and general failure issues in the past which seem to be fixed for now though.
Samsung’s self-developed controller as well as the Marvell controller don’t have these problems. Those two are highly recommended, unless they are paired with asynchronous NAND.

I have the same problem, though they’re probably not as jumpy/stuttery as you describe… using a Crucial M4 128GB.

Well it’s nothing to do with your SSD either, I’m pretty sure. If someone else watches your demo it will probably be fine for them. I’ve had the same issue myself with a HDD. Just doing a google search for “tf2 demo stutter” will show that it’s a problem that’s been around for years without any clear fix.

But how come I can play other peoples demos back (from my SSD) and they are fine?

Nah, didn’t make a difference. All 3 demos from tonight have the same stutteryness.
EDIT: Yeah, just had someone else check my demos and its the same for them, really stuttery.

Turn the setting back on then, it’s safer :>
I have same problem without an SSD, even other people’s demos are jittery for me :(
