As I dont know much about rates, I have a quick question.
Im using the one config we are all using, maxframes. Which of the given rates should I use, if I have a decent internet, but the connection ping varies from country to country.
Let me show you a couple of examples :
Helsinki – http://www.speedtest.net/result/2152900996.png
Rotterdam NL – http://www.speedtest.net/result/2152909432.png
Frankfurt – http://www.speedtest.net/result/2152912839.png
Paris – http://www.speedtest.net/result/2152914430.png
London – http://www.speedtest.net/result/2152918993.png
(no idea what happened with the dl speed there. Kept getting 12-17mb to germany, uk and france)
The point is – my ping ranges from the low 40`s to mid 90`s and I cant figure out which rates I should be using. Also, the actual ingame ping is way higher then the measured ones. I get around 80`ish to the uk. I`ve tried both, and both feel good on some servers, but terrible on others. I know I might just be bitching about nothing, but help me out here.

Not completely sure what you’re asking about, but it’s perfectly normal getting different pings to different countries, it’s about the routing or some shit like that. When I had like 100 ping + to France I just contacted my ISP and they fixed it, try that.

nonono.
I had just woken up when I typed that. What I meant was – which of the pregiven rates that are in chris` maxframes cfg should I be using with pings like these?

Cookeh

“Good” :p

You have a fast connection and your ping isnt higher than the average.

Ping has *nothing* to do with rates. S

This is basically chris’ settings wrapped in some aliases
alias net_pro "cl_updaterate 66; cl_cmdrate 66; cl_interp 0; cl_interp_ratio 1"
alias net_pub "cl_updaterate 40; cl_cmdrate 40; cl_interp 0; cl_interp_ratio 2"
alias net_default "cl_updaterate 20; cl_cmdrate 30; cl_interp 0.1; cl_interp_ratio 2"
net_pro
net_graph 3
rate 80000

Rate server quality with the net graph and adjust your settings accordingly. Get choke? Use lower settings. Get loss? Fix your connection.

With the connection you have you can just put rate to its maximum – 1048576.
1048576*8 = 8388608 bits/s = 8388,608 kbit/s = 8,388608 Mbit/s.
This matches a 8 Mbit/s connection.

80000 would match a 640 kbit/s connection.

Etf2l sets sv_maxrate to 100000 in their server config so higher than that wouldn’t matter anyway.

On the original topic: Actual ping doesn’t matter all that much, what matters is that it remains consistent (this goes for pretty much anything, consistency is better than just getting high numbers).

So theoretically, if i have a 6 Mbit/s connection i should be running a higher rate than the 60000 suggested in chris’ cfg ?
Also, can someone explain what the rate actually does ? As far as i understood it determines how often server and client “communicate” with each other ?

All it does is set a maximum cap on the transfer rate.

Ok, so to put it simple: Will i benefit of a rate higher than 60000 with my connection ?

Yes, 60000 matches a 480 kbit/s (or 0.4 Mbit/s) connection.
