Problems with TF2 and maybe Router ?!

Hello :)
A friend got some problems with his TF2. If he want to join a publicserver, he can’t connect.. He says there is standing: Retry Connection – Lost Connection to Server..
BUT if he joins a passwordprotected server, there are no problems.. he can join all servers who are pw-protected..
please help :(
make sure his firewall isnt blocking anything? then check to see is his router has the correct ports for steam+source engine forwarded correctly
