Removing the FoV 90 cap

Hey,

I know there has already been many debates on the FoV, whether allowing or not more than 90 should be done or not. The last ESL poll about this was around 50% for keeping the default 90 and 50% for allowing higher ones.

Well, a lot of people already use a client side trick with the resolution/aspect ratio that allow them to get the FoV they want, as the “real” FoV is not really the value you set in option, the real FoV is calculated from the value you set in option + your aspect ratio. e.g. http://tinyurl.com/64xwqxd

It can also be done the same way if you have multiples screen and use AMD Eyefinity, you could get at least a FoV of 130 (and more). e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBu3kDpusUk

As some people are already using such tricks or have more money to buy wider/more screens to have a higher FoV and thus have an advantage over their opponents which may not know about this, why not remove the FoV 90 cap?

There are already a few threads on the Steam Forums about this:

I’d suggest supporting these threads if you agree, this might get Valve to notice them and make the change.

Yeah I pleaded for removal of the fov cap in the past… I play with 2:1 aspect ratio now, but tbh they should just remove the cap and let me play fullscreen again.

That means 1 gameplay changing factor though (if I’m not being retarded) and that means that the vertical fov will become variable too, right? (because you can keep high fov at still a high vertical resolution)

Aaaah, I always used this http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/559784493821539725/C233ABC853870F853A906CC092DE0962676B3A09/ but sometimes I found it removed focus from the centre of the screen a bit to much for me, but then again, I was using quite a high fov, but being able to have to places stickied down and not having to move was the best :D

is good!

it was a “wtf?!” moment for me, when I first found out, that I couldn’t increase my fov beyond 90 in options. I even thought, that my game was broken somehow =) I was so used to play quake with fov 120 and fov 90 felt just weird and slooooooow.

but there is one problem:

if the fov cap is increased, people would still use the aspect ratio thingy to get even higher fovs. demos and meds would profit the most.

still, would be nice to try tf2 with fov 110.

The point is to remove the limit. People can already get as much fov as they want by modifying their aspect ratio.

Don’t you get like 107 anyway when using a 16:9 aspect ratio? And anyway, your point about having more money to get better hardware will surely still stand if the FOV cap is raised? Won’t that just mean people can eyefinity or whatever for even higher fov’s?
