FPS problems

So, I’ve recently started playing TF2 (well.. yesterday actually) and the first thing that really striked me was how bad the FPS was compared to other games with the same engine. In CSS my FPS on a 20-man server is nearly always constantly 100 FPS (sometimes drops to 98 or 99) and my settings are:
Models/Texture – High
V-Sync – Obviously Off
AA – 0
HDR – Off
Shadows – On (Default)
Multicore Rendering – On
Colour Correction – Off
And the rest isn’t all that important. But the fact remains, I tend to have solid 100 FPS.
Now to TF2. I was expecting the FPS to be very decent since TF2 is cartoonish (as opposed to realistic which I expected is harder to crunch for your CPU/VGA)but I was wrong. In a 24-man server (cp_badlands) my FPS isn’t even solid 120 (not sure why fps_max is 120 but I’m using Chris’s FPS config and I didn’t change that part because it might mean something compared to CSS’s fps_max 101) in the spawn and once I get to the fight in the middle of the map, it can drop to 50. Just wtf.
The settings are:
Models/Texture – Med
V-Sync – Obviously Off
AA – 0
HDR – Off
Shadows – Off
Multicore Rendering – On
Colour Correction – Off
Now, I’ve recently reinstalled my Win so it might be that I forgot to install something (pretty sure I installed DirectX and the drivers for VGA). Anyone got any possible solutions for my shitty performance?
BTW Using 1920×1080 in both games as it’s my native.
BTW PC specs are fairly decent and shouldn’t have problem running TF2 on decent settings.
Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 620
Memory: 4GB 667MHz
Videocard: XFX ATi 5750
If you want some more inf, feel free to ask.
Thanks
Css can be run at very high graphics on a toaster. Guess you just have to deal with it :P. Try running it in directx8 (-dxlevel 81).

Hats.
ur fps is fine, if u want decent fps get proper cpu or OC that crappy athlon
Fuck sake.
Anyway, then I have 2 questions.
1) Are any of the non-stock items used in competitive play?
2) Is there a reason why Chris capped his fps at 120 as opposed to 101/100?

1) yes, mainly the classic medic unlocks (ubersaw, blautsuger, kritzkrieg). The rest depends on the league. Preferred format by many high-level teams is vanilla (basic weapons) + medlocks (the classic medic unlocks).
2) 120hz monitors and double your basic 60hz monitor.

i dont think its a problem to have 50fps on middle … while its everytime > 30 its ok.
chris capped fps_max to 2*frequency +1 to avoid hitreg issue i guess ( 121 in most case )
to get a list of weapons allowed : http://etf2l.org/rules/league-rules/
Alright, thanks guys. I don’t really have major issues playing with 50 on mid but it just seems odd after constant 100.
Thanks for all the answers.
Its a up hill battle sometimes with getting ideal fps in tf2 luckily we have Chris configs to ease the burn.
LMAO, I just noticed a really odd thing. I’m on the same server with the same res and dxlevel except that I decided to see how a clean wipe on cfg (a.k.a. delete cfg folder) would affect my FPS and how bad is it without a cfg and wow, the FPS is nearly, exactly the same even considering that the settings are quite a bit higher (everything on max near enough). This leads me to the conclusion that settings aren’t affecting MY fps (for reasons unknown) and I should play like this and not give a fuck ;D
imho it’s not about how much fps you get, but the lowest value is significant. You always want to stay somewhere above 40 or something. However what Chris’ cfg does, at least on my system, I keep more stable fps.
Oh and isn’t that 121fps limit due to interlaced / progressive screen stuff?
For my part I do use Chris’ cfg (and thanks to him for creating them) and no matter what (except 32er publics) I stay at 120 fps.

Well, I’m not going to change the FPS max because he obviously used it for a reason and from what I can gather, his cfg is like “the shit” (if you wish) and so I believe in his judgment. However, I will stick to default settings purely because it has no significant impact (if Chris’ cfg meant that I got significantly more stable FPS then I would certainly stick by it) on the FPS and stablesness of the FPS and obviously, it’s nicer to play if it looks better.
Anyway, thanks for everyone’s input.
Chris’ FPS configs will give a decent boost in FPS in 90% of all cases. Of course there are setups where it doesn’t matter, most likely because the bottleneck lies where an fps config can’t change anything.
