Nerd advice needed!

Do any hardcore nerds know of a great value for money laptop or perhaps a sale, deal, whatever on at the moment relating to such?
I’m referring to small, light, thin, but the kind of thing to do uni work on. The uni work is physics, so i’m not talking games development style work, i’m talking spreadsheets and word processing and such.
We’re talking below 400 quid – the further below the better.
Thanks guys!

How big d’you want the screen?
actually, I’m very sorry for hijacking your thread but I’ll put out the question:
I’m actually looking for the same thing, except the work will revolve around programming and probably, later on, small game designing. Being able to play a game or two without major lag would be nice. I have no budget, if the screen can do 1680*1050 it’s fine.
Not bothered about the screen really. I’d prefer not one of the tiny ones, netbooks are they called? I think they might be a bit too small, though i’d give one a look over in a shop to make sure, so if someone says they’re extremely cost effective, i’ll listen to the advice
Also, as for the specs – whatever you think is good enough for that kind of thing. I’m not trying to bring the price down to 0, i’m sort of saying if there’s one for 400 quid which is hugely better than one for 350, i’d not be shy of spending the extra 50. I’d end up using the laptop to its limit whatever the specs end up as. I just want the best i can get for the price i pay, maximum of about 400ish!
