Hi,
I’m doing some research into the possibility of offering real money Esports betting.
As I don’t post here very often I’ll quickly introduce myself: I’m Luke Cotton and I manage Power Gaming who you may have heard of, and I’ve been working in Esports for over 5 years. I hope that this topic is in the correct forum / doesn’t break any rules, apologies if it’s in the wrong place.
I have a company that’s interested in the idea in principle but we need some statistical research in order to really push it forwards, so if you could provide even the slightest bit of information I’d be most thankful as it not only could offer an interesting proposition for you from a financial point of view, but could really help to push Esports forwards into the mainstream, and also offering betting on it helps the case for us to get Government recognition of Esports as an official sport. It’d be pretty cool to be able to tell your mates that they can bet on you to win games I’m sure! ;)
For the sake of this post, assume that there is a way to prevent match fixing (through limits, through bet monitoring etc.)
I’ve made a survey and would appreciate it if you could fill that out (as well as posting any general discussion / questions!)

Thanks very much for your help.
Oh sir please let me answer this one:
“MATCH FIXING”
Please don’t tell me you have a way of preventing that, because you’d be lying to us, which is as unfortunate as it is obvious because this is the internet mate.
Good luck with it anyway, you’re not the first that’s tried and i wish you every success.

Something like that can never happen again, Ma Jae-Yoon broke my heart :(

Even assuming the system is completely incorruptible, I will be against it in principle. But there are always going to be some assholes trying to cash in, so nothing to be done I guess.
Just for the record, I’m not some religious nut against betting in general, I regularly bomb lots of cash in casinos/poker. I can’t put my finger on why I’m so against it, but having grown up with competitive games for 16 years or so I’d hate to see it go down that route.
However this is something i’ve been interested in for a while, I’ve taken the survey and will be following progress
Had the same idea a few years ago but when XLBet was around so it was pointless.
And with paddypower sometimes doing COD LAN event bets it seems like a market they could easily break into if they really wanted to.
Curious about your thoughts on “and also offering betting on it helps the case for us to get Government recognition of Esports as an official sport.” ukesa didn’t really go very well – hopefully though if it does get picked up again they will pick someone suitable for the job. I assume you’re talking about the UK’s government of which I’d be amazed to see the tories back this.
Even so, signed and GL.

why the f do you want esports betting , when you got football betting?
SC2 > football
Match Fixing: In Korea there were no limits on the betting amounts. You offer limits relative to the prizes on offer so there isn’t the incentive to throw games. There are many other methods that I don’t really want to disclose details of publicaly for obvious reasons.
Jacob Nielsen, XLBet Co-Founder:
“I would be ignorant if I say that I am 100% sure it has never happened, but at least I can confirm that we didn’t have any issues at XLBet forcing us to cancel bets for suspicious reasons”.”
“”Furthermore we are in close contact with both ESL and HLTV.org, and we have had examples where these and also actual team managers have contacted us after a “weird” result wanting to hear if some “funny” money was placed on the odd outcome, but as for now answers have always been NO”

Re: PaddyPower – it looks very unlikely that they will do any more events, at least not on a regular basis.
Re: Government recognition: We (the leading players in the UK esports industry) are always in contact about anything related to the Government and gaming, and we aren’t going to let some chumps come along and fleece us again! Having betting offered on a sport helps to increase its legitimacy and public awareness though.
Survey completed, love the idea but do have concerns with the match fixing thing.
Limit’s are all well and good, however what’s stopping each member of a random top team, let’s say power gaming for instance, bettting up to the limit on losing, plus all their friends, and all their e-friends, and their families, and the friends of their families, and their dogs….you get the idea.
The limit on the betting would have to be AT LEAST a sixth of the winnings in TF2, otherwise the temptation will be there for the team members to group together to lose a cap here and there.
Are we talking about 10/20 pence/cent betting here?
