how to change the background in tf2

If i remember correctly you have to put your custom .vtf background in materials/console folder into your tf2 main folder.
To save files as .vtf you need a plugin.
You can find it here: http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/
To know wich background file you have to replace use cfgscape (another program you can find at the same link above) and browse to default tf2 content materials.

when i replace background01.vtf and background02.vtf with my own files just nothing happens. Mb i do in the wrong folder (materials/console?)
now i got my image displayed only on connecting page.

That’s because you mod the wrong file.
You can get everything to work as long as you cover all the files (13 or so). What i used was GCFScape to find all of the files and then vtfedit to create the .vtf files and replace the existing ones.
Like previously mentioned, its the materials/console folder
Note that Valve did add more of the backgroud files with some updates, so you may need to go back and redo some of them from time to time.
