Updates to Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike: Source and Day of Defeat: Source have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:

Source Engine Changes (CS:S, DoD:S, TF2)
– Optimizations to multi-core rendering

– Removed -heapsize command line argument. Some detail: This command made sense in Half-Life 1’s memory manager. The current engine manages memory in a way that doesn’t need it specified. Under some circumstances, specifying a non-optimal heapsize causes crashes and/or reduced performance

– Fixed an exploit that allowed people to send fake VAC messages to clients

Update gave some huge fps increases in CS:S, what about here? Do you actually have to set mat_queue to 2 to get the increase?

I did mention a big difference in a pub. I used to lag a lot in those spammy 32 player mid fights but it’s doing fine now :)

It will only help if you’re CPU bound, meaning those of us on i7’s etc won’t notice much.

Which mat_queue_mode value is the right one? -1 / -2 / 1 / 2 ?

mat_queue_mode 2

Wrong, actually, it’s -1 (but 2 might do the same thing).

You can see it yourself with the game options.
Set Multicore rendering On = mat_queue_mode -1
Set Multicore rendering Off = mat_queue_mode 0.

2 does the same thing. ;-)

Presumably, for this “on/off” variable, anything other than 0 will be taken as “on”…

No, mat_queue_mode 1 does something different.
-2 is the default and is the same as 0.

almost anyone is cpu bound, as most gamers dont play on integrated gpu’s or high graphics settings

Comedian

that, and TF2 is a CPU bound game.
