Because TF2 likes a fast CPU, out of interest what frame rate do you get with max settings?

no way man, i expected it liked a slow cpu!

Using SnowiE’s Timedemo, I decided to run some tests to work out on my Windows 7 X64 system, with a mid range Graphics card, to find out how much CPU you actually need today to run TF2 at full detail on a 1440*900 screen (in game settings see post at top of page).
The reasoning for my test is soon I am going to be buying a laptop, to take to lans etc. most likely running at a lower resolution than 1440*900, and thought I’d share.
The limitations of my test.
I only have access to my system for testing, so it is purely from an AMD Phenom II X4 perspective
I tested using my ageing Radeon 4770 512MB GDDR 5 GPU at default speeds, on a 19” 1440*900 TFT screen (hoping to repeat tests soon, using a Radeon 6850 1GB on a 22” 1920*1080 screen), unfortunately I do not have access to any Intel chips to find out how much Intel CPU you need.
Using AMD overdrive software to under clock the CPU (AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2GHz), I ran the timedemo 3 times at each CPU speed, and instead of taking an average reading, I am posting the lowest reading of the 3 runs
Specification
AMD Phenom II 955 (3.2GHz)
AMD 790x motherboard
8GB DDR2 PC2 6400
AMD Radeon 4770 512MB Gddr 5
WD Black 500GB SATA 2 HDD
tests ran on 7/11/10
3.2 GHz = 5125 frames 37.926 seconds 135.13 fps ( 7.40 ms/f) 11.669 fps variability
2.6 GHZ = 5125 frames 42.896 seconds 119.47 fps ( 8.37 ms/f) 10.028 fps variability
2.0 GHZ = 5125 frames 52.765 seconds 97.13 fps (10.30 ms/f) 7.855 fps variability
1.6 GHz = 5125 frames 64.777 seconds 79.12 fps (12.64 ms/f) 6.201 fps variability
edit
n/b
mobile AMD Phenom II CPUs lack level 3 cache (basically Athlon II CPUs) so are slower clock for clock compared to desktop Phenom II CPUs

A week or so ago I did a new demo with some public play, so you can see hats/ubers/paint/unlocks etc. to see how peoples’ FPS fares here. I expect it will be much lower for everyone.
