I thought it might be nice to get a standard frames per second test for TF2 (like the old demos that came with Quake 3) so we could all see exactly what framerate TF2 runs at on various PCs / Settings. I did a quick and nasty demo on the nice-servers.com TF2DM server and tried to get as much action in as I could whilst still keeping the demo relatively short so it didn’t take forever to run the test.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Download the demo – http://www.mediafire.com/?myzm3xdyajz – Unzip it and place the snotdemo1.dem file in your TF2 directory.
Update – You can also try the second demo – http://www.mediafire.com/?0vsd6y71sinet09 – which has more public action in it along with the new unlocks and hats plus effects.

2. Write protect your TF2 config files! If you do not do this then TF2 will overwrite your settings with the settings from the demo. To do this, just right click on your config.cfg file in tf2/cfg directory and select Read-Only. Do the same for the user.scr file. If you’re really paranoid, save a copy of both of the files before watching the demo.

3. Start TF2 with the settings you normally play clangames with. Open the console and type the following –
fps_max 999
timedemo snotdemo1

4. Let the demo play through.

5. When the demo is finished, you should get a line of text that looks like this –
5125 frames 36.124 seconds 141.87 fps ( 7.05 ms/f) 13.905 fps variability
Make a note of the fps value (141.87 in this case), not the fps variability value.

6. Run the demo two more times, making a total of three times. Note down the fps value of each run-through. Then add all three together, and divide the result by three so that you get an average score. This helps eliminate any variation between each time you run the demo.

7. Post your results along with your system specification and settings here like so –

CPU: Intel e8400
RAM: 3GIG DDR2 RAM
GRAPHICS CARD: Nvidia GTS 250 1GB

RESOLUTION: 1920×1200
WINDOWED/FULLSCREEN: Windowed

Video Advanced Settings (Options > Video > Advanced) –
Model Detail: High
Texture Detail: Very High
Shader Detail: High
Water Detail: Reflect All
Shadow Detail: High
Colour Correction: Disabled
Antialising: None
Filtering Mode: Trilinear
Wait for vertical sync: Disabled
Motion Blur: Disabled
Field of view: 90
Multicore Rendering: Enabled
High Dynamic Range: Full
Direct X Level: 9.0

Draw viewmodels: Off
FPS Config Used (if any): None

Average FPS over 3 demo playthroughs: 135.46

Any thoughts or suggestions on how to make the test better (excluding comments on my lame RJing and taking 3 rockets to kill scouts ;p ) or if there’s anything you think I’ve missed, please let me know.

DUCS

Theres a timedemo in CSS I’m pretty sure that shows off every possible effect used in the source engine (although its a flythrough a map, not an actual demo), so if someone who knows how to smooth gets bored, that would probably be better.

Just a suggestion though, I’ll post what I get here later.

Also, deathcams cause your FPS to increase drastically, so any deaths in that demo will cause the result to be innacurate.

If someone provides a Demo showing everything I’ll try my hand at smoothing the entire thing.

Lol it seems I’m much lower than everyone else, as it takes about 4 minutes to play the demo.

Average FPS over 3 demo playthroughs: 30.09, 21.97, 22.55. Average: 24.87 (I think the first result was an anomaly)

What’s this actually for, btw?

Hmm?
EDIT: If you’re saying my fps is bad compared to my PC, I know.
Whenever I change my settings it lowers the fps, even when I change it back it lowers the performance.
I’ve just decided to leave it as it is.

This. That setup should perform at 100 fps at the very least.

Also, ninja edit.

I’d get constant 120fps on your machine in no time.
