Does it happen in not-Valve games?

Freddy

I had the same issue. It turned out that my game had somehow changed itself to dxlevel 80 instead of dxlevel 81. Try doublechecking.

just tried another game and still had the same problems, would this mean its a problem with my computer rather than the game?

Hello good sir. Troubleshooting TF2, is no use when the issue also happens in other games. This suggests that it’s something with the computer itself :)

Did you change anything recently, like install a new driver or anything?

Also, could you provide a DXDIAG report for me, so I can have a look at your drivers and your system?
Go down to start menu -> Write DXDiag in the search bar -> press DXDIAG -> Press “Save all information” and it will make a TXT for you. Upload it to some free filehosting service, and post the link here. That would be great :)

There’s a way to solve the problem quite easily, if it’s the right solution anyway. Try checking your HDD, maybe your HDD is full? Full harddrive will cause your PC to underperform, and will cause stutter lag and even longer freezes. If it’s only in-game, check your GPU drivers, try to update them. There are so many things that can cause your games to lag, it’s really hard to solve problems like this. Was it alright before? Was your fps fine in all games before? If so, it’s either your drivers or your hardware is failing (could be cpu, gpu, ram even motherboard failure). Too little information to work with, sorry.

I am using an old driver 306.97 for my graphics card to fix the flickering issue with dx8, could it be that? i had a few problems with stopping it automatically updating so it updated a few times. other than that none i can remember

my harddrive is about half full so i dont think its that. yeah about that gpu drivers – they are not up to date so maybe i need to use dx9 and latest drivers?
my fps seems okish in other games but its mainly just like fps drops every couple of minutes to about 1 fps for a couple of seconds
thanks

Hello good sir.. I will have a look at the DXdiag, and will give you a response asap :)

Hello again.. even though, the drivers are old, you shouldn’t have so low fps. But updating to the newest driver might be a good idea, for troubleshooting purposes.

To move forward I suggest the following:
-1: Uninstall your current NVIDIA driver using Add/Remove programs
-2: Reboot your computer
-3: Update to the latest NVIDIA drivers: http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/win8-win7-winvista-64bit-320.49-whql-driver-uk.html
-4: Run the following application: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35 – this will make sure you have the latest version of DirectX
-5: Reboot your computer

Check if the problem persists after this :)

If this doesn’t work you can also try the following:
-Check task manager manager if there is applications using all your CPUs resources. If you have an unusually large amount of processes open, I can recommend to use the following app for a better overview: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
-Disable Ambient occlusion in the NVIDIA drivers
-If you have the option, try inserting your GPU in another computer to see if the FPS issue remains.

Let me know how it goes :)

Hi again
I did all the steps above and updated all the windows stuff as well but the problem still exists. I used that process explorer program and looked at what happened when I had the spikes and on the cpu system information graph it showed this http://puu.sh/3Eybh , the bigger the spike the less fps i had. I think i had this weird fps drops when watgching a stream as well but i am not too sure. is this something to do with my cpu ?
thanks again
