Keeping it short, over half of my shots deal heavily reduced damage or no damage at all. I used to blame my aim for it (or inserting random nationalities into my curses), but lately it has just become over the top retarded. It seems like the hitboxes were lagging behind the model, as if I was watching a demo, but sometimes simply nothing registers. It seems like it might be an issue with my ISP (first gateway located 157km away from here based on traceroute, what the fuck?), but I can’t believe I’m literally unable to do anything about it – I cannot switch ISPs due to living in suburbs.

In shorter, I experimented with almost all possible, viable combinations of rates and none guarantees reliability over servers. Any suggestions or do I just have to swallow it?

so, what’s your first hop ping then(after router)? Visual tracerts aren’t neccesserely accurate anyway, but if your ping’s fine then the distance isn’t a problem.

First hop after the CTE gates (router and DSL modem) is that first gateway I mentioned, located far, far away from my house. Taking google.com as an example destination, the log looks like this:

yeah, 30 ms starting ping obviously isn’t great (probably lots of interleaving on the line aswell) but it wouldn’t affect your actual hitreg, just make your ingame latency naturally higher. You should keep an eye on the choke/loss value while playing though,since those can heavily affect hitreg.

I get <1MS 99% of the time, 1MS on a bad try.

Also the first line looks to say that you are using some kind of USB wireless adapter?
Maybe that thing is a piece of junk and causing the problems?

@nTraum: No, I’m over Ethernet. My DSL modem is one of those cheap ones – to help you imagine, if I try to ping too many hosts at the same time, I DoS myself and the modem shuts down. Also, as I said, I’ve tried all those combinations of rates already.

@Trath: Possibly, although the equipment at the moment is irreplaceable, so I’m looking for other viable solutions.

Why is the equipment irreplaceable? If you have access to the config of your modem or know your isp credentials, you can replace it.

Something seems to be supoptimal in your LAN at least. There’s a good chance that your network hardware is defect.

The equipment is irreplaceable, because it doesn’t belong to me. Still, I’ll try putting it in an oven or something – in case anyone’s wondering, the modem’s D-Link’s DSL-320T.

Try using net_graph 3 to see whether you have choke or loss.

Also, you could try forwarding the ports steam/tf2 use on your router.

That has nothing to do with the performance though. I took some time to observe my loss/choke counters during pickups and none of them spiked even once.

I had the 321B when i had ADSL, i assume its the same just different annex version. It was a bit fragile, needed frequent reboots, the actual modem almost died everytime i opened the web interface of it, however apart from that it was fine. If you dont experience loss/choke and if your ping is stable then im afraid it could just be a placebo, or something with your tf2.
