i use windows 7 64bit ultimate
have a nvidia 9800 gtx with the latest driver installed
but every time after a couple of minutes sometimes 1 hour or it crashes to my desktop saying “display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 295.73 stopped responding and has successfully recovered”
i can still here my game at the background playing but i cant get the “picture” back up.
does somebody have an answer for this because im getting desperate.
Did this happen after a driver update? I had the same card as you up until a few weeks ago and not had this issue. Latest driver I had used with that card was 280.26 (because lazy).
to be honest i dont know, i recently got a new motherboard, cpu, ram and psu and installed windows 7 64 bit, before this i was running a windows 32bit with probably an older version of the driver, the weirdest thing is, it only happens in tf2, it doesn’t happen in any other games.
Trying an older version of the drivers is worth a shot then, I’d say :)
Suffering from the same problems as Gibix for over 2 months now. It only seems to occur in tournament-mode for me though. Also have tried the solution mentioned by Spike, unfortunalty it doesn’t fix the problem…
Edit: Btw I am running an Nvidea Geforce GTX 260 with the latest drivers on a Windows 7 32 bits..
Last edited by Kastos,
i read somewhere that the problem may be using a custom hud, i just reinstalled tf2 with default hud, and no crash in the past 2 hours, so i hope i fixed it, im now gonna try it with a hud
I don’t use any custom huds (or any custom content for that matter) and I’ve been getting that error for ages, half a year or a full year now. And I am completely clueless of what’s causing the error, and just got used to it :( If anyone knows about any potential fixes (I don’t think rolling back to a year old driver would help, or is a sane solution in any way) let us know :)
It has nothing to do with custom huds, i’ve tried every hud i know of and the default one, same thing happends no matter what. I’ve tried reinstalling Steam and Windows, nope. I’ve tried everything i can think of, still crashes. On Steam Forums is a thread about this, and we aren’t alone. There’s really many having this problem.
played for 2 – 3 hours without crashing, i deleted my tf2 and reinstalled it, installed a hud and no crash, so dont know.
Hello good sir
Do you play any other games? If so; does these intermittent crashes occur as well in other games? usually when you get these errors they are power related I’m afraid, but if you only get them in TF2, then I don’t think it’s hardware related at all :)
This is a known bug in TF2 with Nvidia DX10 graphic cards.
There is a huge thread on the steam forums about it and there is no working fix for this issue. I hope among many others that Nvidia or Valve will fix it soon. More Information about it here: http://forums.steamgames.com/forums/showthread.php?s=89caba2252ebfd939c9e0577c6a47a06&t=1774666

it only happens in tf2, other games are fine, i have read in other forums were they say its hardware related, but tbh that just doesnt make sense since it only happens in tf2 and it only happens since i installed win 7

as far as i read on other forums this is a problem with the TDR protocol (timeout detection and recovery)
i found on the same steam forum thread that you linked a possible solution, i just did this http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1774666&page=2 and i hope it will work, i will keep you guys posted if my game will crash again
I have tried every possible fix including the TDR fix, but nothing worked. The only real solution is to play Tf2 with DX-Level 8.1.
I don’t think his issue directly relates to the issue on that forum. The error he is getting relates to the kernel in the driver itself, which usually relates to a hardware error. But yes, seeing as he only gets this error in TF2, it might be within that scope.
But as always when you have these issues, you should keep all your drivers up to date. Not only your graphic card. Especially chipset drivers and sounds drivers are important too. If you use RAID, you should definitely keep your storage drivers up to date also.
Last but not least, always make sure you have the latest DirectX setups installed. You can download the websetup from here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35 it will make sure you have all revisions of DX installed.
