Multiple Account Rule Update
July 22, 2013
An important change has been made to a rule regarding ‘alt accounts’. The reasoning behind this change was that the previous rule was very lax and made it hard to monitor potential cheaters. Previously a high level player could make a new account, not play on the previous account, and play in Division 6 anonymously. This led to many false AC Requests that meant we had less time to catch potential cheaters! The new rule prevents this.
The new rule states:
2.6 No account sharing and multi accounts
Every player is limited to only one ETF2L account at any time. A person creating multiple accounts or multiple players using one account is not allowed. Multiple players from the same household (family, close friends, roommates, …) that may be sharing the same IP address must notify admins and use seperate ETF2L and Steam accounts.
Players caught creating multiple ETF2L accounts or allowing use of their Steam account to a third party in official matches may face punishment ranging from deactivation of the account to reversal of match results and a major warning for fraud or a league ban. Each case will be reviewed individually and penalties will be assigned based on severity of the offense and its impact on the competition. If you wish to change the attached Steam ID of your ETF2L account, contact admins and they will change it for you.
Every player has until Monday 19th August to report any alt accounts and any ETF2L account that will regularly log in with the same IP (eg. brother’s ETF2L account). Contact an admin here.

1. Please tell me you’re joking about reporting sibling accounts… What prevents me from making an alt account and just claiming it’s my brother?
I also hope that this rule is prominently displayed on the account creation page for people unaware.
2. A long time ago I had 3 etf2l accounts (before I actively played, because I forgot my account details). It took me some time to report those to get rid of them, under this rule would I have been banned?
1. Nothing. But if your lie is seen through, you can be sure that a punishment will follow.
2. Don’t be ridiculous. Nobody will receive a league ban because he or she forgot to report his second account from 4 years ago. League bans are only the last possible measure that may be applied, if someone is caught using multiple accounts. There are many reasons why someone may use multiple accounts, ranging from having lost the Steam account over wanting to troll in a lower division to circumventing a league ban or the merc rule. The punishment will, of course, not be the same for all of these cases. We have a broad range to deal with multi accounts, from simply blacklisting the Steam ID for ETF2L matches to applying a league ban.
The thing I’m most worried about is that rules are blindly applied without thinking if they’re appropriate, eg: http://etf2l.org/matches/42802/ the nickname rule.
While strictly a rule violation, ‘MightyMe’ didn’t register his nickname ‘MightyMe’… The rule tried to prevent people from using ridiculous nicknames annoying casters and making it harder to follow top players, result: ‘shelikesitrough’ got that name accepted, ‘MightyMe’ warning for not having their name registered.
Something has seriously gone wrong, a literal interpretation of the rule being one of them. I feel that this rule is ripe for similar ‘abuse’.

Germans own thise leageu and hide there german top players from ban. GJ ETF2l
Casual; the nickname registration rule was there to apply consistency throughout a running league. If someone wants to go through the season as “mymumknittedmynewsweater”, who are we to decide they can’t do that? The only thing we ask of them is that they remain consistent throughout the season, so that everyone knows in every game this player plays in that they’re watching the same person.
If anyone violates the rule, we apply appropriate punishment. If we don’t, there is no point in having the rule in the first place.
Spike:
Exactly! MightyMe has never played with a different name, he was perfectly in line with the spirit of the rule (consistent naming) but violated technical details. It was perfectly possible to apply “Each case will be reviewed individually and penalties will be assigned based on severity of the offense and its impact on the competition.” (aka admin discretion) here and not handing out any punishment…
On the other hand we have people *cough*smzi*cough* who HAVE a name they’re known by register something retarded while technically correct completely blowing the spirit of the rule.
A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. If admin discretion is available, use it.
