Promotion: AVerMedia Giveaway

Date November 8, 2012

In the age of the ever growing popularity of streaming video games on the Internet, it’s not uncommon to see players show off their skills in games like TF2. Since real-time video encoding puts a heavy strain on the system, many people consider upgrading their equipment for the sole purpose of enabling smooth streaming of high quality video footage from their favorite games. We thought it’d be great to support the community in their ventures towards promoting our beloved TF2, and so did AVerMedia, one of the major companies specializing in designing, manufacturing and marketing multimedia, Internet TV and consumer electronic products.

Considering AVerMedia‘s strong commitment to enriching entertainment experiences and promoting effective communication among people, it seemed like a great opportunity for us to broaden horizons. AVerMedia was so kind as to host a giveaway of their staple video capture card, Live Gamer HD C985, for one ETF2L player.

As a dedicated video capturing card, the Live Gamer HD will be your best mate for tracking every in-game activity – with its super low resource consumption, it will allow you to record footage smoothly without any noticeable stutters or FPS drops. The pass-through function brings you a zero-delay video capture while gaming in real-time and it supports recording at various graphics card resolutions, up to 1080p@60 fps, to guarantee a perfect recording. Along with it comes the RECentral, an easy-to-use, efficient software that will aid you in the process. No matter what knowledge background you have, it can guide you to finish the initial configurations for different game platforms, even providing auto-configuration options for people unfamiliar with the technology. RECentral can keep multiple recording profiles and lets you select from the drop box when needed. What’s more, you can even import those profiles after migrating to another PC. Each Live Gamer HD also comes with a 3 month premium license of XSplit Broadcaster and is fully integrated with the version 1.1 to assure a flawless user experience. With the integration, video streamers can now either use the premium video quality from the device or enjoy the benefit of the hardware encoder without technical hassles.

In case you haven’t tried streaming yourself yet but always wanted to try, you can follow this fool-proof guide that covers the first steps of streaming with the Open Broadcasting Software, written by VanillaTV’s Scotland skyride. He is also the person you want to contact to add your stream to the VanillaTF2 streams sidebar that is integrated at VanillaTF2.org, ETF2L.org and the reddit TF2 channel /r/tf2/.

To take part in the giveaway and win this beauty, you need to follow a few basic steps. The process is simple:

Comment on the newspost and explain why it should be yourself to acquire the card and what kind of a review you would do about it. Our jury will pick the best entry and the winner will get to do the review he or she planned to do, which will be published at ETF2L.org around November 20. We will expect it to be either a video, about three minutes in length, or a text essay, minimum 1000 words long, presenting the card’s specifications and a demonstration of its features. Edit: The winner will be decided on Sunday, November 11 at 16.00 CET

I believe I would be a good candidate for the Live Gamer HD C985 and will detail my reasons below.

First and foremost is for streaming. Some of you may remember my stream which I ran through the summer this year at twitch.tv/CUBE_TF2. Numbers wise it was a pretty popular stream, my live record being 270 people watching me beat those bad American soldiers on MGE at i46. I currently have 500 followers on twitch and around 50,000 views.

I streamed division 2 and pickup2 6v6 games, Premiership 9v9 games, MGE and Deathmatch practice as well as some public games. Unfortunately, I had to stop about 2 months ago due to constant updates from Valve adding content to TF2, which reduces the performance of the game, along with the strain that streaming puts on your CPU harassing my frames per second to the point that TF2 was unplayable whilst streaming, so I decided to stop (at least until I could either afford a capture card, or xsplit improved enough to prevent the dropped fps and micro stutters which caused me to stop streaming).

If I were to win the Live Gamer HD C985, not only would it mean that I could start streaming myself playing TF2 again, I would also be able to stream for VanillaTV as I have done in the past. I’ve worked (non-paid) in VanillaTV for over a year doing lots of production work and making video content. I have been running the VanillaTV YouTube channel from the ground up and have now grown to be one of the largest competitive TF2 Channels (nearing 6,000 subs and over 650,000 views). I have also attended many LAN’s with VanillaTV and I feel my experience in conducting interviews, giving LAN video tours and editing video content will help to produce an in-depth unboxing, demonstration and review of the Live Gamer HD C985.

I also run my own YouTube channel for my TF2 Fragmovies. My most famous pieces being the ETF2L Highlander Challenge Fragmovie, a movie I made showing the best TF2 Highlander Teams in Europe (gaining 150,000 views since its release last year), and also my more recent production; PREM which won the Boneyard Movie Competition, a competition ran by a community member which had 31 Movie entries from all over the world. (PREM has gained over 70,000 views in two and a half months). I put a lot of time and effort into any videos that I produce (both above movies took several months to make) and hope that the quality of production shines through my work.

For the review I would be looking to make a professional, high quality video review of around 5 minutes, filmed with a High Definition DSLR and audio recorded with a lapel mic. The video would contain the unboxing of the card, talking through the specification and features, installing the card, thoroughly testing the card and comparing results to my previous setup and finally wrapping the video up with a final review and links to where the product can be brought. If I won I believe that the card would be used positively in helping the growth of streamed competitive TF2 and the produced review video would be a professional video of the highest standard and seen by many people.

I have started streaming again but it is quite difficult to stream at 800×600 when you only have an AMD processor. Also I can type quickly so 1000 words would be easy.

me, i stream all the time :)

Got my big boy fibre optic connection today, so I should be able to stream now
Attempts at streaming have given me annoying micro stutter (my PC isn’t bad but it isn’t the best) and I wouldn’t like to play the keen games with my setup at the moment.
I’d probably do a video review if I can find my video camera charger

    I deserve to win.

    Why?

    Because fuck you that’s why.

  24. schocky: MAFIA said:

With this card, I would be one step closer to stream all my games. It’s about time! The main problem as a gamer is that you get quite a bit of input-lags which this card helps with. As a spectator you don’t really need this card, but as a broadcaster I will be able to stream and upload my gameplay. In high quality, with no lag and no problems, all thanks to the card! (The TF2 Community needs more gameplays :D )

  25. Koeitje: AUTOBOTS said:

Because I hate playing with even the slightest micro-stutter. Even though my PC and internet connection are enough to stream the micro-stutter just makes it unplayable for me. A card like this would solve it. I actually looked into buying a capture card when this streaming thing started to take off, but I just don’t have the money to outright buy it nor can I really justify it due to not already having an audience.

I can do reviews (http://www.vanillatf2.org/2011/07/hardware-filco-majestouch-review/) and I like turtles.

  26. Retsh0ck: 32erz - 2strong said:

give it to me I always wanted to stream (mainly fifa) and I can’t cause of no fps / lags. if given this card I will stream. can has?

    QFT jesus cube you’re keen

  28. `DA.KA. said:

For a quite long time i wanted to stream. I’ve even wanted to do it but I had lags and my fps was low.
Also i think it’s very important that i’m making movies (so far as I can) it takes much time and movies are not so good and not so smooth.
I wanted to buy new computer but I can’t afford it now. If I” have luck and win this card it would be very helpful for me. Then i could stream and make fragmovies.

In addition to what I wrote above I will hold a streaming session where I will review amazing games such as Farming Simulator 20xx, Train Simulator 20xx and Moonbase Alpha.

I would love to have it and review it, not gonna lie, but I’m a div5 scrub, if you want to see div5 streams with portuguese comms go for it and give it to me, else give it to someone who really deserves it!

Maybe ETF2L will also find a way get cookye better connection and give that card as a small bonus, eh?

Avermedia helped me alot when I was streaming with Xsplit. Though I got massive amounts of screen tearing with a 120hz monitor. So much, it’s not worth it.

  34. Rando?! said:

Would love to see more CUBE streams ;)

  35. schocky: MAFIA said:

Etf2l must decide: Either they support a streamer or help to “create” (such a great word) a new streamer. I just hope to see many videos afterwards, so new tf2 players [Epsilon] can learn sth. [can steal some tactics]

    good night!

    Who doesn’t wanna see that?!

He forced me to do this I swear.

  39. Koeitje: AUTOBOTS said:

SteveC, couldn’t you just use the card on your 2nd gpu output and have it capture from there in clone mode? You’d be able to run 120hz on your main monitor and 60hz on your second screen. That should stop any tearing?
