To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes; both have the advantage of being comparably short reads while at the same time being really, really good.

Also, Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. Depending on your moral and social views, this could be a book you’ll love or despise

Some of my favourite authors and their books. I’m in work and on my phone so you can find links for yourself…

Adam Roberts:

The land of the headless (Simply amazing book).
Stone

Stephen Baxter:

Evolution This book’s first chapter introduces one of the first mammals, running around the feet of dinosaurs and then follows that one string of dna through to 500 million years in the future. Awe inspiring, educational and simply stunning.

Ring
Time
Space
Origin

Coalescent
Exultant
Transcendant
Resplendant

Dan Simmons:

The Hyperion omnibus
The Endymion omnibus (probably my favourite sci-fi series of all time.)

Ilium
Olympos (a re-telling of the siege of troy from a very interesting perspective ;) )

Iain Banks:

The wasp factory
Complicity

Iain M. Banks:

The player of games
Look to windward
Pretty much every ‘culture’ novel is boss tbf.

China Meiville: (dis guy got skills, steampunky and very different)

The scar
Perdido street station

Chuck palahniuk: (wrote fight club)

The horror. (Disturbing and brilliant, will live long in the memory)

Random:

The life of pi
The curious incident of the dog in the nightime (technically a kid’s book but so much more than that. Very surprising read)
I am legend (forget the film and read this short book, superb)
The tales of thomas covenant
The belgariad series
A song of ice and fire
Saturday

Please, anyone, read some of these and let me know what you think. Some literally,
(Literaturely?), incredible stuff there. Go for it.

Not in any particular order:

With the Old Breed by Eugene Sledge
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (I enjoyed it more when I studied it)
White Fang by Jack London
The Curious incident of the dog in the night-time by Mark Haddon

Also, Equus (its a play but its so good just read/see it)

The Demon Cycle is a pretty epic fantasy series (by Peter V Brett). Currently only 3 books (with a 4th spin-off that gives more back story to the main character).

Another fantasy in the process of being written is the Lightbringer Series (by Brent Weeks). Only 2 books atm.

And if you fancy a completed series (again fantasy), The Night Angel Trilogy (by Brent Weeks) is a good call. There is, as with my first suggestion, a 4th spinoff book (only available in e-book format though if I remember correctly) that gives some backstory.

All really good. :)

You literally stole the words right out of my mouth, was going to say all of these :D

Another consideration for fantasy is either the Mistborn Saga (by Brandon Sanderson) or The Way of Kings (also by Brandon Sanderson.) Way of Kings is only 1 book in a series right now but it’s a pretty hefty one and Mistborn is a really solid trilogy (think it’s got a 4th additional book as well.)

War and Peace

I actually bought it. It’s standing here on my bookshelf looking at me. One day I’ll tackle it.

Anyway:

The Old Man and the Sea is a nice little book to read.

edit: fucking auto correct

As far as fantasy goes, The Malazan Book of the Fallen (Steven Erikson) is the best series I’ve read, 10 books.

Rob Grant – Incompetence

His other books are very funny as well, possibly written as Grant Naylor, (the duo behind the red dwarf tv series), fun stories.

Trane

The only Rob Grant book I have is ‘Fat’, which was very funny, should have checked out more of his work really.

Also love Red Dwarf of course.

The red dwarf books are ‘infinity welcomes careful drivers’ and ‘better than life’. If you loved the tv show you will love these. Some similarities to the show but different enough to be worth your time.

Trane

I’ve done the ‘infinity welcomes careful drivers’ audiobook, with Chris Barrie narrating, was very good.

If you like science fiction you should definitely check out some Isaac Asimov.

To get an idea of what his writing is like, read the shot story “The Last Question”

If that seems interesting to you, check out his Foundation books and his robot series (I like “The Naked Sun” the best)
