IBM Model M good for gaming?

I’ve been using the same laptop style keyboard model http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/8491/ultrax.jpg for more than 10 years and consider switching to a IBM Model M http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/1959/modelm1391401.jpg . Can anyone tell me what it’s like to play with it? I can’t recall ever using a mechanical keyboard, but i think I’d appreciate it and I wouldn’t mind the clacking. I’m most concerned about that it won’t allow me to rattle around as quickly because of increased pushdown distance and resistance. Should I grab an old one on ebay or buy one of the replicas from unicomp http://pckeyboards.stores.yahoo.net/cus101usenon.html ?

lol I used to have a really old sweex mechanic worked perfectly for 9+ years well it’s still working but could get a free other old(ish) mechanic keyboard from hp.
I just love those keyboards cause if I’m playing on a keyboard you described first, I tend to press way too much I didn’t want to press or not feeling as if I pressed anything at all.. think you’ll get used to it.. but it’s what you prefer I guess.

Get one of the unicomp clones if you really want a clicky mechanical keyboard with buckling springs. The nice thing about them is that the click sound and feeling is at the exact point of actuation.
Most modern mechanical keyboards use the Cherry MX Blue/Black/Clear/White/Red/Brown caps. These have different resistances, sound, release/activation points.

I love the MX Blues for typing, but for gaming they can be a bit confusing. You can feel/hear the click of the release before the key stops working.
So for gaming I’m using the Steelseries 6Gv2 (MX Black). Still types pretty good, but it’s non-click, non-tactile.

My experience is very similar to Arie’s. I have used buckling spring numerous times before, now I’m using a £5 keyboard by PC World. No shit about this keyboard. PS/2 so better response times (than USB), has full set of keys, including numpad, about 75% the width of my (now dead) G15. Not the best keyboard I’ve ever used, but the keys make a loud noise, which is good, and the activation is consistent (won’t activate unless you depress the key completely).

The only thing to watch out for is keyboards that can’t handle certain key combinations and error out, I dont think its a limit of the ps/2 interface but I found it more common on ps/2 keyboards.

USB has the same problem, the problem is with the arraying method used, not the interface.

On USB you can usually only press 6 keys at the same time, due to some bs around the USB spec.

On PS/2 you can press as many keys at the same time as the keyboard can handle.

Another advantage of PS/2 is the lack of a polilng rate. USB gets polled at 125Hz by default, which you can increase to 1000Hz if you like.
A PS/2 keyboard isn’t being polled, it TELLS your computer to pay attention instantly. No polling rate, no delay.

There have been methods to get around it.

Don’t those just change the combinations that causes black-outs to combinations you won’t see used often (f6-12 at the same time or whatever).

Can you tell some more about your Steelseries Arie. Been looking into that for a while because its easy to get a hold off, but I keep reading the quality isn’t that great.

The 6Gv2 is good, don’t see how anyone could say the quality isn’t great. Haven’t had any issues with it.

I read about the keys wearing down (the characters on it). Could have been another keyboard though :P
