Do gaming peripherals give you an advantage?

An interesting topic if I do say so myself. Is there any point in spending extra on so called gaming mice, keyboards, mousemats, headsets, mouse bungees etc? Do any of you believe that using an expensive mouse will actually make your aim better?

I think that buying an expensive keyboard is 100% waste of money if you are buying it to improve your skill. Headsets are pretty important and although sound isn’t as important in TF2 as it is in games like COD or CS, there are times when having a good quality headset can help ingame. Also the quality of your microphone is important, you want your team mates to be able to hear your calls quickly and clearly and in my experience detachable mic’s are a no no. A mouse is without doubt the most important part of your setup in my opinion, there are alot of nerds who know far too much for their own good about mice.. but I think sticking with a mouse that you are comfortable with, doesn’t skip or have weird acceleration/deceleration etc is what people look for and the high price mice such as many of the razer mice and the weird (shit) cyborg rat one will give you more of a disadvantage. Same applies with mouse mats, expensive rarely means their good, it is 100% preference, I use a cloth mousemat because it’s more comfortable for my wrist and feels smoother for me.

I have seen alot of lower skill players with really nice and expensive gear, so I figure they must play the game less than top players.. but they don’t. So my conclusion is that splashing out on expensive gaming peripherals will not make you better at TF2!

what about those 3D glasses and those things you can get on your head to improve the response time/effect thingy of your actions?

Good mouse give you some advantage than mouses from Tesco etc., but it doesn’t help you much in aim. Pro player with shitty mouse can easily own ppl with good mouse and low skill.

Imo buying expensive keyboard is waste of money. I have old one (PS/2) 7+ years old and works great. I can easily say it’s indestructable. Also i have average peripherals and i don’t mind while playing. Only skills restrict me to gain higher.

I’d argue that is more important to spend money on a screen than anything else. You can easily play with a 5,- keyboard, 20,- mouse (Microsoft 1.1 (SE) and/or Microsoft 3.0), and a cheap-ass headset. But if your screen has massive input lag en low refresh rate its all going to really shit :P. Still, if all people had the same shit they’d still be better than others.

quite agree with your points, as long as the bloody things do the job they’re supposed to, you can play with anything. However, I think there IS a reason why many people prefer peripherals over others, especially when it comes to mice, and that being the acceleretion problem, be it positive or negative – and there are indeed a few mice that handle it way better than the average mouse you buy at a store for 5€. The same goes for most peripherals really.
also, iirc there is a famous keyboard that comes up every now and then that is said to last looong etc, thinking it was an IBM model or smth?

This. Good monitors can really make the diffrence. Everything else is preference.

WOOOOO!

I’m fussy but I know for sure for FPS games I’ve got to have a good quality mouse and a fresh (non-worn) large mousepad. My aim definately started to improve years ago when I got an mx518 and a proper mousepad so I’d say it definately helps. Does it make you a good player? No there are tonnes of variables involved, such as genetics (to a small degree), practice, determination ect. but I do think having top line peripherals does help.

As far as keyboards go, while I don’t think they are too important in fps games, I have recently noticed from playing HoN that they are massively important in rts games and that type of genre; to the extent I’m probably going to pick up one of those mechanical keyboards soon.

If you have a mouse that can glide precisely and smoothly across a surface with top accuracy, then you’re definately going to have some advantage to someone who is moving over an uneven (frictionwise) surface with a cheap mouse that has input lag ect.

You gain an advantage but it don’t make trashnerds pro like me.

In my opinion it’s mostly mouse and monitor, headphones not so much as this is TF2 we’re playing, not CS.

Don’t spend extra money on overpriced gaming gear. Spend the money that you save by not buying that shit on Modafinil or, if you can’t find that, plain old amphetamines.

Until we get drug tests in eSports that’s the biggest advantage you can get from external factors.
