This topic has been discussed numerous times in the past but here’s a resonably short summary:

If you permanently ban a cheater, they will create a new alias, new steam account and continue playing. They might still cheat, they might stop, but they still aren’t being punished except for the few $ needed to buy a new steam account, and losing their existing reputation, if they had one in the first place. Either way, the cheater is back in the community so the ban has done nothing apart from result in the admins having to spend more time trying to identify and catch them again.

If you temporarily ban a cheater, they could create a new alias, new steam account and continue playing. They could however respect the ban duration, stay active in the community and continue playing pickups and PCWs without cheats. If the player keeps his original name and steam ID, they can be monitored. Admins do not have to go around looking for old cheaters with new names. This has proven to work as there are several cheaters who have completely reformed, at least for now and are once again playing fairly in the community. They have still been punished though… they had to go without competitive play for a year or so AND they constantly get shit for what they did before.

You can also argue against growth of the community. A core player gets banned for cheating (at least the admins saying they cheat without providing evidence (which we know they don’t do)), a team might not be able to rebuild from it and fold. A few players might find a new team and a few might quit the scene. At least being able to play PCWs as a team until the ban expires could mean a team staying alive and more players staying within the community.

This is just a hypothetical question, if they get a second chance:

The league allows them a comeback, but will teams do? There are many clans around with a zero tolerance policy in this case.

Do you really think cheaters with active banduration should be allowed to play pickups and PCWs ?

we should process cheaters in court!! they should be punished with humanitarian work.

Zero point five tolerance +1

Actually I’m for 3 strikes out system:
1. time caught cheating just a warning
2. time caught cheating 6 months suspension from all ETF2L competitive matches
3. time caught cheating banned for life in all competitive TF2 matches on ETF2L, and all other competitive TF2 communities (Wp, ED, CB, ESL, etc.), punished by court with some humanitarian work on Haiti

the end

so everyone can cheat once just to find out if his hacks will be detected? Oo
i think 1 year ban is ok.

scenic

1. detection should be a 3week ban :>

WTH!?

I personaly think some of you are being unbeliably harsh. Sure they cheated but in the end if they choose to come back and cheat again there gona get banned again.

So it’s up to them isn’t it? Don’t let the people who have learned from there mistakes be rejected because some of those who haven’t are out to ruin it for everyone.

Those who have hacked have most likely been vac banned and had to buy a new copy of tf2, Thats punishment in itself, AND they had to wait for a 1 year ban to be lifted so if there really gona come back and hack after all that there bloody idiots.
