Hey friends!

As some of you are probably aware we hit our first goal on our fundraiser not long ago – which means we’re coming to i49! We’ve always intended to bootcamp, and the easiest way for us to do this is probably through an internet cafe.

I’ve done some research and have come up with a few options/sketched costs – but I figured I’d ask the locals. If any of you can recommend a good net cafe for gaming in London or Birmingham (preferably the first for tourist purposes — but we aren’t attending primarily to be tourists so anywhere is fine) please drop me a post below.

Thanks guys :)

Inside Trocadero, there is the only gaming internet cafe that I know of (within central London anyway) – http://www.londontrocadero.com/tenant/3/Gamerbase

Try and get in contact with them and see if they can cut you a deal or something. From what I remember, it’s around 5GBP p/hour or something. Like I said, it is in central london in the middle of Piccadilly Circus/Leicester Square.

EDIT:
Oh one thing to note….it’s inside HMV and with the way things are looking, there is no say on how much longer HMV as a company will be around. If HMV do disappear, that place might go too…

That’s correct, HMV was all ready to be liquidated as a company however a buyer was found through a group of companies who have vested interest in high street distribution. They came in and kept the key stores afloat such as those in prominent places in the major cities.

So HMV as it was doesn’t exist any more and the large majority of it’s stores have been sold, most likely at a loss to pay creditors.

Birmingham only has one gaming cafe and it’s terrible.

Lan centres are pretty much dead everywhere though. Found a decent one in reading the aussies are probably going to pick, any local residents want to go and see some skills?

There’s a great one called “Twitch” in Edinburgh, Scotland. £3.50 per hour and they have decent machines, QCK+ mousepads, MX518s. You can also bring in your own peripherals. Also an amazing city for doing touristy things with plenty of castles and museums and shit and it has a pretty bit international airport.

EDIT: Plus, twitch give discounts for groups and parties, are pretty nice lads and would be more than happy to help keep the costs down if you tell them who you guys are. Send them an email if you have any questions. Their website is here: http://www.twitch-gaming.com/

Oh, and they have plenty of machines, >30 iirc so don’t worry about that.

HMV is continuing. It was saved, largely with backing from the record and film companies who, quite frankly, didn’t want to see the last major high street retailer selling films and music, go down.

Some of their stores are profit making. The one in Oxford Street is, so that pretty safe. When I went in a while ago, they had a large section devoted to video games plus what looked like a LAN area but you’d have to check to confirm. It might have just been consoles.

Checking out the Trocadero website it still talks about having a LAN centre so it is worth checking that too

Oh, there may be this too http://www.cyberzone.co.uk/

Ramown knows of a terrible one in Birmingham. He took me there at 23:30 when I came there.

Having spoken to a few mates, it should still be up actually – at least that HMV store with the ‘Gamerbase’ located inside it…

I’ll likely be going past it sometime this week, so will update and let you know if it’s still there.

There is so much conflicting information everywhere about Gamerbase. If it’s still open it would be pretty much perfect, although the email I received from an enquiry appears to be an automatic email (its like 3am in the motherland right?) and reads:

“Due to a technical issue all gamerbase centres are temporarily closed.

We hope to re-open soon and will post updates on http://www.gamerbase.com as they become available.”

This wouldn’t be so frustrating if the website existed…

Thanks for the offer Muerte, seems on-foot is going to be the best way to determine this :)

Anyone from Manchester wanna “bootcamp” at kyoto? When I mean bootcamp I mean shots of vodka every time you die.
