Secret TF2 'All Stars' game

There’s an all stars game being planned at the moment that’s the brain child of mvp from Fracture. Apparently it’s being done as a promotional thing for the tf2 community, as some kind of exhibition match. I have a couple of problems with this idea..

Firstly, the teams were chosen by mvp (who is, funnily enough, one of the chosen players). There was no public vote – I spoke to him about this and apparently there was a vote; but just those whom he wanted to listen to were asked for their opinion. The counting of the votes was performed by mvp himself.

I don’t know about you, but if I was trying to give the broadest impression of the TF2 community, I wouldn’t try an achieve this by ignoring the opinion of the community by not giving them a say and keeping the whole thing a secret.

Leaving aside the stupid way that the players for this were chosen.. TF2 is a team game. That means that if you put 6 of the best players together, and they have barely played together before – the result isn’t actually the best game of TF2 you could ever watch, it’s the highest skilled mediocre game of TF2 you’ll ever watch with little tacitcs and team cohesion (the 2 major aspects that raise TF2 above other competitive team FPS games).

If you really want to provide a promotional event for the community, why not run an invite tournament with the top 8 or 16 team fortress 2 teams in Europe? More games to show, better team play, better tactics, and better games to watch.

This all stars idea that mvp has created (and included himself in) is an ego trip that serves no benefit to the community at all. Why waste valuable Quad V airtime on this rubbish?

I propose an alternative all stars invite tournament with an open discussion on the teams that should be included.

MMM disgruntled ?

No offence but if i look at that sheet .. thats a pretty impressive list.

Yes it didn’t include communityvote, but its a hard thing to pull off succesfully.

Yes TF2 is predominantly a team game but if you look at the NBA where this kind of thing is done too (and basketball is very much a teamgame too), it can be done.

If this might pull interest of public players to get more into the clanscene, i’m all for it..

i would rather see a game between the two best teams rather than a just another mix-game where teamplay normally goes down the drain. As such, the allstar teams will probably be worse than the actual clans the players play for.

Ep:

That’s kind of my point though – if you want to encourage people to join the clan scene.. why not show them top flight clan games?

Surely Coinz who won the 1on1 Soldier cup should be included in this?:-)

At least he has actually won something=D

Sir

NBA players are tought to be non-egotistical bastards ;p, this is the internet :) its all ego and now even more ego+ for the people on the list hehe, although the list is pretty good, just the idea hasnt been gone about in the right way :}

i already told u in irc, and ill say it again:
that doesnt look like an all stars team to me, but that doesnt give me or u or anyone the right of bitching about it for more than 1 hour in irc, and now in etf2l forum…

dunno what do u have against mvp, but u dont need to flame whole comunity against him, just because of this.

Moonkid:

If you want people’s attention, make it shiny and oooh and aaaah.. not purly tactical.

Allstars games are the for amusement, not to look at who’s the best team.

They want great airshots and amazing moves and kills.

You’re totally missing the point of the all-star’s reason of existance.

waah waaaah, why isn’t *insert name* on the list! He’s so much better than that piece of poo *insert name*!!!11

I think that that list looks pretty nice, and noone can deny that every single one of those guys on the list know their stuff. Sure there are many other great players around, but hey, noone wants to watch a 12v12 “all spammers” game, do they now?

As has been stated the point of All Star matches is to entertain, see how the best of the best do their thang, airgibbing (hopefully because thats what WE want to see) their way to glory.

Personally I think the idea is great, even though that piece of poo *insert name* isnt as l33t as *insert name*

Haha this list is very funny.

Who does is it ? you mvp ? and you put your name in ? it’s a joke ?

Hmm when i read it, heavy is ok, demo is ok, medic is hmm ok, but half of soldiers and scouts are a joke.

Thanks for this flam.

i agree with Peacock for Once !

I don’t get why you take this so seriously. All star games are played in alot of different games and sports. Hell, they’re even playing showmatches between the best Koreans in StarCraft 2 and the game isn’t even released yet.

Sure, there are some questionable names on the list but who cares? It’s all just for fun anyways. You’ll feel better when you kill someone on the list, then you can say you killed an All Star player, oooh!

Abomination

While Drew has a few valid points the overriding factor is this is an exhibition match between a handful of highly skilled players, nothing more.

While this in itself isn’t enough to guarantee rehearsed solid team play, strategy, and tactics which as we all know can only come with time through experience. it achieves its goal of providing other communities a focus and ultimately raise awareness which can only be beneficial to the scene.

What we can hopefully look forward to are a few moments of genius, stupidity, drama punctuated with flourishes of kills etc. that demonstrate the fundamental elements of the game to a virgin audience and give existing players something to talk about love it or hate it.

There are always critics of any venture such as this no matter how team selection occurs there are always players included or excluded who others deem overrated/underrated and while this is healthy for national teams or a more broad European team which would require community input for selection as its the few representing the many, but this isn’t anywhere near that scale so keep crying babies hehe!

It is a very funny read that list, i mean most of the choices you can’t really argue with, but what really is the point of all this? (except the soldiers..)

Just seems a completely pointless exercise to boost peoples ego, and/or a very poor attempt to get TF2 some coverage..However an allstars game at the moment, would be worse to watch than the majority of the mid level pcw’s.

Most the reasons for this opinion have already been posted :)
