Sounds like a network issue, unless he gets looping sound in tf2 as well, which might suggest something causing his system to hang.

Anyway check network first :

Start > Execute > cmd > \"ping -t mumble_ip > c:ping.txt\"

This will constantly ping your mumble server and put the results in a txt file.
To stop it just press ctrl-c or close the DOS window.

Let it run while playing game shouldn\'t mess with your ping.
Then when he gets the lag he can check if he was getting timeouts

You should be able to see some timeouts or very high response times if there\'s an issue with the network.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago.

first thing i\'d try if I were you : delete script and resources folders in your tf folder, give it a try. If it works just install newest version of your hud.
Sorted !

HF

Edit : Actually I couldn\'t start my game at all when I got this problem. If you can start yours its probably not related.
Try it with -autoconfig as a tf2 launch option.
You could also try -windowed -noborders

Sometimes though, I still get it when i\'m playin games and the gfx settings are too high. did you change a setting recently ?
