nvc’s recommendations for july

So basically…

* Viewsonic VX2268WM: 16:10 + 1680×1050
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/22-viewsonic-vx2268wm-3d-120hz-wide-black-silver-lcd-vga-dvi-200001-300cdm2-1680×1050-3ms

* LG W2363D: 16:9 + 1920×1080
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/23-lg-w2363d-full-hd-120hz-3d-black-dvi-2xhdmi-1920×1080-10001-400cd-m2-5ms

“All gaming monitors use TN panels (put simply they are the fastest), but they do have an unfortunate downside – viewing angles and colour reproduction are a little behind others. That said, who cares; we’re gamers and we want 120hz! Both monitors perform equally well and i beleive the viewsonic edges it for gaming as the lower resolution combined with 16:10 over 16:9 will bring more FPS to the table. Whatever your decision though, don’t buy another model that’s not listed above, i could list issues with others all day (input lag, poor pixel response and overdrive trailing are to name just a few key words).” …as taken from what instag1b linked!

The only real thing that separates the 2 above are the aesthetics (LG looks poo) and aspect ratio (with the 16:9 LG you get extra width and a full HD resolution which is great for youtube/blu-ray etc, but you also get less height than the 16:10 Viewsonic which is less advantageous when browsing the internet and for some… when playing games.)

The only negative thing I’d say about both monitors is that the stands suck (only tilt forward/backwards), also, HDMI 1.3 ports on 120hz monitors such as the LG do not carry more than 60hz… so you’ll need to use Dual Link DVI cables as provided with both i.e. unless you have a console or blu-ray player they are perhaps irrelevant to your decision etc.

TL:DR – You won’t be disappointed with either of the 2 above monitors, i currently own the viewsonic and am very close to trading it in for an LG (performance is equal, but 16:9 and the full HD resolution looks more fun for Battlefield 3, even if I’ll get less FPS as a result). We’re now starting to see the 3rd wave of 120hz monitors and although they look better, they perform worse for pc gaming and come with a lot of pointless features that add to the price tag.

I got the LG W2363D yesterday. It’s really nice, once you configure the colours to not be absolute shit. And as nvc mentioned, the monitor itself is a bit ugly (there’s a stupid light bar on the bottom).

Make sure you turn the sharpness down from 5 to 3 ^^

Mark, how do you make the colours not shit? I have an LG W2361 and it’s horrible.

I set brightness to 100, contrast to 60, preset to sRGB (this is most important), r45g50b50, and sharpness to 2. It’s personal preference though.

Thanks, and thanks to nvc too for the recommendation, I got this screen and the razor mechanical keyboard yesterday from your buyers guide.
