So this is purely something I was curious about. Have the Welsh, Scottish and English teams (maybe the Irish as well) ever discussed merging into a UK/GB team? Not saying this should happen or anything I was literally just throwing it out there as a hypothetical. I guess the welsh, the scottish and the irish like to retain a certain individualism from their english oppressors or something.

I think if this happened though it would make for one heck of a team that might even rival some of the stalwarts of the TF2 nations cups like France, Germany, Sweden etc.

the other nations can’t offer us anything good anyway.

You know that the Republic of Ireland is a independent state right?

Well the welsh team has Mike for a start and as for HL then Ireland has (arguably) the best HL medic of the season admirable… that’s just off the top of my head. As I say I don’t think this should or ever will happen but I was curious as to whether they’d ever even discussed it.

The reason I ask is because I find these kinds of strained irish-scottish-welsh-english relationships kinda interesting like we’re 3-4 seperate countries forced into one by hundreds of years of political manouvering.

Yup. I do, they’re also part of the British isles but I understand that they would not be part of a UK team since that would only be wales + scotland + england (+ nothern ireland who don’t have a time iirc).

Before ETF2L had nations cups and when ESL still had TF2, ESL held a nations cup with a Team UK playing.
Back then Team UK meant it was Mike + 5 English and now it would most likely be Mike + 5 English as well.
Also this would take away the chance for a lot of other players from Ireland, Scotland and Wales to play for their country.

Fair enough. This was the kinda answer I was looking for, thanks. Athough you never know whether there are any up and coming welsh/scottish/irish players that could be good enough, the second point makes a lot of sense.

I was wondering if it was like a national pride thing. I know especially some of the irish folk are still kind of, shall we say, touchy about the subject.

The thing is: UK and Republic of Ireland are diferent states. You cant just fuse countries like that. Following this logic you could merge Portugal,France,Germany etc in the UK team. Idk, maybe you are just trolling, but I would be offended if you told me that Portugal and Spain should merge their teams x)

Or maybe im wrong, and Ireland is just another region in the UK.

Lol nah not trolling bud. I don’t know the histories of portugal and spain well enough to comment on this but Ireland & the UK have a long and shared history of occupations, international agreements and to some extent they even share their resources even to this day. But you’re absolutely right that the Republic of Ireland is it’s own state. Although I wonder whether a TF2 player from Nothern Ireland would choose to identify as Irish or British because although it’s technically British, many people from Nothern Ireland still choose to identify as Irish.

I’m really not trying to shit stir or anything I was just curious about people’s opinions on this being a British person myself.

Rly? I thought they hated Irish people!

Btw I heard that the UK participated together in the Olympic Games! Nice initiative.

It’s complicated. Most Catholic people are much more sympathetic to the Republic of Ireland whereas Protestants are alligned more with the UK. This is not a universal rule but even now there are giant fences seperating Protestant and Catholic areas of Belfast and curfews in some areas. Not to mention a huge security presence at pro-catholic/pro-protestant events in the city. Although the main fighting in the country ended with the Good Friday agreement back in the 90s there are still riots, the most recent of which was this year and it was over the flying of the Union flag above the Belfast town hall. I mean how petty is that?

I think it’d be a good idea as long as the other teams associated with team GB (such as England etc) would continue thriving. I always thought some of the big reasons for national highlander teams were ping similarities and language similarities and these two would still be present in team GB.

Merging Germany, Swamp Germany and Mountain Germany into one team would be interesting as well :D

It’s personal choice whether a player from NI identifies as Irish, British or Northern Irish. Though NI isn’t part of GB, hence the UK is “The UK of GB and NI”.

After talking with Bulow and Admirable, it was decided that we’d have all-Ireland teams for the Nations cups, similar to how many sports have all-Ireland teams. Plus, Ireland has fuck all people who play TF2 so it made sense practically. It’s understandable those in mainland-UK did not want to have a Team GB as there are so many players competing at a high level in each of those countries.
