Steam Escrow (Petition)

If you haven’t seen already Steam are planning to implement a new system to trading.

Have a look at all the information below:

What is Escrow?’, After a trade has been accepted by both parties, if either party’s account has not been secured by the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator, then to protect against unauthorized trades, the traded items will be placed in escrow. During the escrow period, the items will not be available to either user. This allows users who have not secured their accounts to cancel any unauthorized trades and recover their items. Canceling all pending and in-escrow trades will place a trading hold on your account for a few days to prevent any further unauthorized attempts to trade away items.

This will hurt everyone. So many users do not have smartphones, most of whom will not buy one to play csgo. Prices will also crash most likely, if half the userbase leaves due to a 7 day trade lock, who will be around to pay premium prices for your skins?

Not only this, but a multi-million dollar group of websites related to tf2, csgo, and steam in general will go under. This would include csgolounge, csgojackpot, csgoegg, opskins and countless of other websites, unless someone highly innovative figures out how to code bots that can use mobile confirmation (this would be hard as hell).

What are your opinions on this?

Why is there a petition against this? It’s a really good idea to prevent items getting stolen. 2FA will solve the “my inventory got hacked” problem without much effort.

If it’s the same implementation that they have now (confirming trades on your phone) it’s pain free and easy for me to use as someone that has to send items over from time to time. Smartphones are really cheap, so getting one for steam trades is a non-issue.

The main problems with this are as follows:

1. If you do not have a smartphone or one that is supported by steam such as Windows phones, you pretty much can not get past this and will have to wait X amount of day until you can complete the trade.

2. You can only have one phone linked to one steam account so if you have 2 or 3 accounts you will need more than one phone to remove the restriction

3. Large trading sites such as Saloon, Tf2 Wearhouse and other sites as such will be effect (Unless they have been white listed or something like that)

4. Trading is no longer instant if you do not have the steam verification app

Yes smartphones are cheap I agree but I don’t want 3 different phones to get past this my work phone and 2 more for my steam accounts and no other reason.

But yes this seems like a good idea kKaltUu and I am personally glad Valve are trying to do something about this as they no longer give items back once your account is hacked full stop (No account Roll backs).

However it makes a lot of problems for the trading community in general.

I could see how it would effect people in the long run as I have a smartphone that is not supported by steam and I will be penalized because of it.

Are you sure a phone number can only be linked to one account?

That’s what I thought. Ducky you’ve misread this. A trading site only needs to own one phone. So it’s probably a good change over all.

Ah should have looked at that. Thanks

still in the long run not everyone has a smartphone or one supported by Steam.

I’m not saying this is a bad idea, I like the idea I’m not completely against it at all, it will help protect our account and that I’m all for!

I just wish Steam supported windows phones so people that have my problem ain’t penalized because of me owning one.

I DO NOT hate the idea that Steam may implement.

I wanted to see peoples views on this topic, as there are a few down sides with this for some people and tf2 trading sites.

I personally like the idea that steam are taking action to secure our accounts.

I hate every single action steam does to make it harder for stupid people to lose their stupid items since I have to put up with all the annoying shit like linkfilters etc too.

I’m not really into trading but I can see why people would get upset with it and the feature itself is 100% unnecessary. Just like the new perma merc rule.

How inconvenient for you.

Valve hasn’t announced the introduction of the system officially yet. So there’s no information on when and how the system will be launched. There’s a question on how csgolounge.com, dota2lounge.com and similar services will work under such terms, since they assist thousands of users in executing such exchanges. They will most likely be added on a special “white list”, which will enable them to work without delays.

If Valve do not add sites like these to white list it will kill the site as people would get more and more annoyed with waiting X amount of days to get their items and soon or later just give up on it, Slowly killing the sites.

It’s obvious Steam are trying to help solve the scamming issue out, but the deeper I look into this it seems very shorted sighted.

(Also the petition has ended believing me to think it has received the amount of signatures it needs and Valve should receive a email from the community about this system > http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/steam-escrow-petition)
