because Valve is a shit developer company. They only care about $$$, so they develop a game until it’s maximal profit point and then they move to the next thing. They did it to cs 1.6, css, Half-life, TF2 and next will be dota2 and cs:go.

Today’s FPS stats:
CS:GO – Twitch 8 657 / In-game 91,010 (9,5%)
Quake Live – Twitch 2 041 / In-game – ???
Team Fortress 2 – Twitch 152 / In-game 83 326 (0,2%)

Team Fortress 2 looks like a big football stadium without funs. Therefore there is no business point to support events in the TF2 world, and no difference: online LANs or offline cups.

It makes sense to only get money from the players until community not die. And VALVE successfully makes it by overloading his TF2 client by tons of a digital garbage (hats, effects, tags etc), for which the players are willing to pay.

The second obvious TF2 problem: the number of players will only reduced with a time. Why? No spectators – no new blood. Therefore now VALVE active develops new game modes for playing with a bots. It will be useful to bored players when quantity of a “live” players in TF2 will not be so much. This lagging MvM servers also allows get some money from players now.

So there is 3 key points in VALVE’s TF2 business model:

1. No support events (TF2 isn’t interested for new players).

2. More digital garbage for money (digital garbage -> real money).

3. More bots for money (digital & lagging bots -> real money).

This is a simple business model with a high profit level for investing it to Dota2 or CS:GO.

tl;dr

TF2 looks like a digital dope. It’s simple to understand that nobody wants to meeting with drug addicts, may be only to take some money from them. :)

In other words, everybody in this thread is bitching about Valve not putting any money into competitive, with some thinking that it is deserved/a right.
It is not deserved because 6′s/highlander doesn’t make valve any money.
Even if you don’t think it is deserved, to complain about Valve not caring about eSports or something is dumb because Valve never made TF2 with the intent of some competitive format and it isn’t in their vision for the game. (as opposed to Dota for example, where the format is the same as the competitive format).

growing comp scene > more people streaming/let’splaying > more people playing = more coverage = more money?? (literally needs minimal investment and you don’t need to promote your game anymore). TF.TV in top10 referrals for official game blog

I said that the competitive format isn’t the way the game was meant to be played by its creators, and Valve have never said anything to imply that it is now. (I think I remember for i46 that some guy at Valve said something to the effect that TF2 is meant for the public servers, quick join and play game)

early cs builds were not meant to be played in competitive format even early quake based TF wasn’t balanced around comp but people still played it team vs team.

but then there is the issue that tf2 is simply not fun or too confusing to watch (for outsiders)

Because it’s not enjoyable to watch someone stream pubs unless he has charisma which most of the streamers lack. Even day9 was not able to keep his viewers entertained during his pub stream. That’s why there has to be some sort of end game in a form of: ladders/leagues/ranked matches/tournaments matches to which a lot of players would strive forward and try to reach a certain level of skill. Quite obviously top players who reached the high levels would attract large amounts of people who would like to improve and learn and that would create a playerbase for further grow (see, I did not forget about profits). Sadly TF2 in it’s current form has only pubs and mvm which contains little to no entertainment value if you compare it to what moba,cs,sc2 offer.

Not a single compwise update.
TF2 community should make a open letter for Valve ;______;

Well, there were at least two bigger updates who were partially catered to the competitive community.

But you are right, there could me done much more, like the ingame HL lobby system or spectator minimaps.

Steam stats yesterday:

current peak game
328,258 610,285 Dota 2
54,915 94,627 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
45,268 62,671 Team Fortress 2

Valve has made alot of money of the TF2 community, and TF2 has a very stable community with a healthy influx. But there aren’t real incentives for a game developer to push this 6 year old product to new customers. Sure it’s alot of fun to play and to see competitive TF2 for us as fans. But I think Valve sees TF2 as a used up product, which still generates alot of income. They will keep on supporting it, with a small amount of resources. But what’s the gain for Valve to really sponsor this game, when they have dota and cs:go, source 2, etc on their hands?
