Announcing the 5v5 Cup! Plus updates

5v5 Cup

edit: Our plans to make some improvements to the team types (hopefully reducing clutter at profiles) conflicted with the early signups. Apologies for the miscommunication. Read below for juicy updates!

It’s time for the awesome annual summer fun cup. This year the flavour will be 5v5 classlimit 1, a format that is certainly fresh and interesting. This cup will allow signing up with your “fun team” (former koth/3v3) or your 6v6 team (a player should be in only one team that’s signed up). If things work out we will use the option for future cups as well, so be sure to get a lineup ready for this cup! Signups will open when the maps and schedule are announced, most likely next Sunday.

The guidelines for this cup are as follows:

  • Teams: 5 of your finest combatants versus 5 of theirs.
  • Classlimit 1 for all classes. As usual this won’t be enforced in the configs, so that teams may have a little more flexibility during the game. Shoutout to Finland Moose for suggesting this format.
  • Strictly no unlocks. Standard weapons only for this, the focus of this cup will be on the team structure and classes.
  • If you really need it, you can have one merc allowed by default. If, somehow, you only have 3 member ready, you may have a maximum of 2 mercs, with the second merc requiring opponent’s permission.

The maps for the cup are still up for discussion, you can see the current list in the forum thread. If you want to see arena style, please add if you want to see the medic class included.

It’s worth emphasising that there is no limit to the amount of teams in this cup. If you feel like entering, go for it! New players are just as welcome as veterans, and their feedback is just as valuable to us as anybody else’s. If things works out you might see more of 5v5 classlimit 1.

Multiplay i43 Online Tournament – Win tickets to Insomnia 43!

Our good friends Multiplay are holding a competition to win free tickets to i43! This competition is split into two brackets; an upper bracket for teams from Division 1 and above, plus a lower bracket for teams from Division 2 and below. This is a great chance for teams from all skill levels to try and win tickets to the event which promises to be another big LAN for TF2. The online tournament will run on Tuesday 26th July and Wednesday 27th July. More information including details on how to sign up can be found here.

And in other news

  • To copy from a comment Crasp made elsewhere:

“S10 will allow at most: Blut, Ubersaw, Kritz, Quick Fix, Crossbow and Equalizer. At minimum: standard weapons only. S10 will hopefully start in early to mid September, and finish before Christmas like S8 was supposed to. […] The map pool was to be 6 maps decided by a nifty public vote system.”

  • Aliens are invading our TF2 maps!
  • Do not miss the ESL playoff match between Israel K1ck eSports and Europe TCM-Gaming! It will start around 21.15 CEST today. For more info on SourceTV, streams and casts please head over to VanillaTF2.

Are the rest of the rules as they normally are, ie. Config wise? Difference of 5 timelimit 30?

5on5 with cl 1, nice, I actually also mentioned this a few weeks ago.
This would bring some advantages in comparison to the 6on6 with cl2.

Equalizer or no equalizer, these rules + public-vote-maps will surely bring back all teams to ETF2L.

Sorry for the confusion regarding signups and teams!

Upside is, you’ll be able to sign up with your 6v6 team. Be sure to give your thoughts on 5v5!

seeing as how equaliser is not, in fact, vanmedlocks, and it’s one of the few unlocks which both random up the game AND are OP, it would probably not bring back all teams to ETF2L

It’s a good thing you change your weapon rule set and remove all the crap weapons you never know if that was allowed or not last season. But don’t go from an extrem ruleset to another because prem teams want it, some unlocks are perfectly fit for comp, are not op and to be honest are not a big deal but teams are used to play with them.

I talk about flaregun, sandvich, cloak and dagger, equalizer and why not ambassador/pain train/jarate. We have tested it that season with esl rule and it’s fuckin’ frustrating as a scout when forced to play on a server with esl config/whitelist and you can’t play spy in a “normal” way with C&D (:D) or heavy without sandvich etc.

Btw ban the equalizer and you will have an addition of 3 prem teams and 200 d3-6 team calling quit :D

Never tought it was a good idea but separate reluset between prem and the rest of the division could be the solution.

that’s good direction on unlocks, except equalizer, ban it or at least make it 1 per team, but it’s better to just leave it banned.

    equalizer is OP?
can you please show me one demo / video where a CP was lost/won simply because a soldier had an equalizer (i.e. without it, the outcome would’ve been completely different)? how often does that happen, really?
if you can’t kill someone equalizing around with 10 hp, that’s hardly an excuse to ban the weapon.

I’m fine with any ruleset, but this whole medlock propaganda is just silly…equalizer makes the game more “random” than say…kritzkrieg?
Also: didn’t you promise that everyone would have a vote in this?

No need for an ad hominem. He only said the way you have to play spy will start to differ from how people usually play(ed) it.

  22. Buffalo Bill: TDR » - T⑨ said:

He said you can’t play Spy in a ‘normal’ way with the C&D due to the ESL whitelist, or play Heavy the ‘normal’ way without the Sandvich. To me that implies that he can’t play Spy/Heavy/Pyro without those unlocks. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, Keyro.

  24. RaCio: GoT² said:

The normal way would be how people usually play the class. On average you don’t get to play sniper or heavy to much in 6v6, so a lot of skills are taken from how you play spy in other forms. Someone who does a lot of axetinguisher play would be forced to change up his tactics for 6v6, that doesn’t suddenly make him a bad player.

  25. Buffalo Bill: TDR » - T⑨ said:

That depends on C&D/Sandvich/Flaregun being the norm. That’s an entirely different (and gigantic) debate that I’d rather not get into.

  26. konr said:

Don’t allow something just because it isn’t overpowered. If you’re going to ban stupid as dicks weapons like flaregun/sandvich, then ban the other weapons and go the whole hog. And yes, RaCio, it does make them a bad player. If they can’t switch up their game and not offclass as pyro with the axetinguisher in mind, then they are a bad player. They wouldn’t have to change up their tactics more than just thinking to themself that they don’t have an equalizer, thus maybe not even going pyro because it may not be a good idea without it.

    tl;dr vanilla+medlocks (NOT THE QUICK-FIX) please.

    bob loblaw, ill be civil:
getting damaged is a failure in the game
equaliser rewards you for getting damaged
    equaliser rewards failure
simple as that – that is why its OP

Also, it allows a much easier rollout and it allows soldiers a faster escape when they mess up. I don’t see why we should allow an unlock which:
    a. Bridges the skill gap between good and bad players
    b. Allows mistakes to be made with little or no consequence

  29. Keyro: Cheater said:

Yes you’re correct bill, of course i can adapt to spy with vanilla weapons but it’s annoying, i don’t want and don’t see the point because i feel those weapons are not a big deal (I will not go further into the micro debate wich each weapon is suited to comp, why etc blablabla). On the moment i just passed my turn a as spy and re switched scout wiating fot the next game to do that.

@Smoke : just go develop pickup bot instead of debate that shit !

  30. Sideshow: (ETF2L Donator) - ft. - WiK? said:

Equalizer is the only unlock most lower teams use regularly and would be annoyed should it be removed. I agree it’s OP, but people are used to it aiding their rollout. Some kind of public poll to see how many lower teams would not enter s10 if it were banned would be useful (there might be more than you think).

5v5 looks awesome, but the signups say they’re closed, any particular reason for that?

there is more options besides ETF2L as the skill of the team rises; prime example being the previous incarnation of infused

wow thanks dummy for being „civil“

@everyone who linked vids: can’t see em bc of GEMA and I’m too lazy to look for proxies

You all seem to claim that a solly gets some sort of a superpower by using the equalizer.
If a solly goes too aggressive and actually manages to get away with it, either noone is shooting at him anyway (then he could’ve escaped in any case) or the enemies aim is really, really bad or the soldier is incredibly lucky. And an equalizing soldier is about as dangerous to the enemy team as a tick is to the rhino (and about as useful to his own team).

I still think the impact of the equalizer is dramatically overrated and I get the feeling everyone is just repeating something they read somewhere else.

Anyways, go Vanilla! I don’t need unlocks. I just don’t like hypocrisy.

  35. Sideshow: (ETF2L Donator) - ft. - WiK? said:

No dummy I just meant they’d quit. It’s unlikely but it might happen with a few lower teams who rely on the eq a lot during rollout.

  36. Ordinator: tuhi said:

    @bob loblaw
You can think all you want, but the fact is that all higher div’s players agree on equ rewarding bad play, easy rollouts and healing order. And you would’ve agree too if you’ve played something higher than div6.

“And yes, RaCio, it does make them a bad player. If they can’t switch up their game and not offclass as pyro with the axetinguisher in mind, then they are a bad player. ”

What? I never said they can’t switch. “Someone who does a lot of axetinguisher play would be forced to change up his tactics for 6v6, that doesn’t suddenly make him a bad player.” How does the fact that you’d force people to switch from the loadout they feel use most of the time, make them bad?

If anything, they are far from being scrubs because they use whats most effective.

That vid is from before the huge damage nerf.

@Ordinator, I’m pretty sure he or other people don’t deny that. There’s always advantages and disadvantages to a certain choice. It’s the evaluating of those that is the important part. Making a constructive argument can’t be that hard :)
